If I send you a copy of the crappy VHS telecine, will you stop putting useless posts into this thread?

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

I've been bumping this thread to keep it alive, but that would be awesome.

Be sure to read russs15's Jan 21 post in the alt.binaries.starwars thread.

Instead of re-posting the previous version, you MIGHT rather wait for Starkiller's upgrade.

Oh yeah, one more thing ...

bump

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

yeah, i would consider waiting (not that i'm being lazy in not wanting to post) but the 77 boot I have isnt really even worth watching, the quality is so horrible.... I mean, I can still post it, but I might wait for a slow period so I dont boot other peoples posts off servers with crappy retention... but if you're looking for something worth actually KEEPING... wait for an upgrade.

Here is what The Starkiller had to say on his Bootleg transfer.......

I have just transferred my pre-ANH bootleg tape and will finish authoring it soon. I will probably upload that. I know someone else already transferred one of these, but I think my tape may be closer to the source. But my transfer just looks better anyway. The quality still sucks, of course, but it looks just like the bootleg tape.

Having seen some of his previous work, including the 1982 ANH VHS ex-rental tape which was simply incredible (considering the age and source), I am looking forward to seeing what is released.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to need a copy of that as well, once it's completed and out there.

EDIT: This is evil post 666. Woo.

The quality really does suck. It's a curiosity though and an interesting watch. But once it's been watched once I doubt it'll be watched again. Good to show people who STILL don't believe it wasn't called Episode 4 originally.

I guess we can call it a piece of history. That is maybe why it is so coveted. Still curious about it (there was a time I was curious about the Star Wars Holiday Special but that's a different story).

This is certainly of interest..........

I have just had a look at the sample and it certainly looks to be a generation or two lower than the transfer seen previously. It is still far from watchable (compared to the LD transfers out there) but well worth it for the curiosity value.

This release by The Starkiller is fantastic.

The original source is really crappy as we all know but this transfer looks to me to be as near as possible to the VHS as we will ever get.

The menu option to go direct to the main mono mix differences is a master stroke.

The highlight for me is the DVD ROM content which includes "The Starkiller's Guide to the Mono Sound Mix". This compares the differences between the mono and the stereo found on the 1982 NTSC LaserDisc - which is as near to the original 1977 theatrical mix as we will ever get.

This guide is just brilliant!!!!

For each difference, there is a brief screenshot and the option to play the mono or stereo version. All the well known diferences are there along with many more that I have never noticed.

This guide is the only guide you will ever need to the mono mix and it demands to be uploaded to a website somewhere to be seen by all. In fact, please consider this a request to The Starkiller to do this. I am sure that a home could be found at the Galactic Trade Federation if needed..........

Thanks, Russ! I've always been fond of that mono sound mix. In the days before home video, the Story of Star Wars album was the next best thing to the movie theater. That mix got burned into my memory!

I think it would be great to put the mono guide online, but I don't have any web space. It needs about 14MB or so. If you want to host it at the GTF that would be excellent. Give me an email.

Sorry to ask this, as I've probably skimmed over the post in question, but is this available anywhere outside of newsgroups?

It's a good thing when Ell gets bored. I think we had a few bad (deliberately) covers on the boads some time ago.
