Isaac Hayes Quits 'South Park'

By ERIN CARLSON, Associated Press Writer 9 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.

Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem — and he's cashed plenty of checks — with our show making fun of Christians."

Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.

Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

I'm with Matt & Trey.

South Park is an equal opportunity offender, and that's what makes it work so well. I hope we get some cartoons of Mohammed this season.

As a devout Christian, I enjoy that show's jabs at religion every time. Not all Christians have Mr. Twig up their ass when it comes to religious humor when it speaks the truth. Monty Python cured us of that in '79. Jews rip on themselves all the time (Seinfeld, The Hebrew Hammer, History of the World, Richard Belzer's stand-up, the list goes on) and hardly anybody from their faith gets their knickers in a twist.

I'm curious as to why it took Isaac Hayes four months to denounce the episode. Perhaps he's feeling the pressure from the higher-ups in his cult? Because you CAN'T associate with ANYBODY who badmouths Scientology if you're in the club.

For those who haven't seen the episode, find it and watch it. Then spend a few days googling the crazy crap South Park showed us and you'll see that it's pretty much all true. ... and is even worse than what was covered. Perhaps the best debunking site is Operation Clambake. You'll never see Tom Cruise, Kirstie Alley, John Travolta or any of those pricks the same way again. Maybe it's just the Thetans talking, but I think L. Ron is laughing right now at all of them from his cozy room in Hell, where his stacks and stacks of cash incinerated upon arrival.

I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

Yeah awsome. They should consider it a blessing that they made fun of them.

That seriously was the funniest episode this season! If Chef can't hack it, well, to heck with 'im. Don't dish it out if you can't take it.

First of all, it's sad that such a talented musician like Isaac Hayes has anything to do with that money-grabbing SCAM called a "religion" by some idiots. It's just sad and pathetic.

Second of all, that episode was broadcasted last year, and he is quitting now? Maybe he dosen't keep up with the show, and they told him only now?

So, to all scientologists out there, scientology is a filthy, LYING, money-grabbing SCAM founded by a criminal called L Ron Hubbard who died filled with prescription drugs, the same drugs he tried to discredit, while trying to shove some alien god crap like Xenu down those IDIOTS throats. Yes, IDIOTS, who paid thousands of dollars to be told CRAP.

Quoting that episode...

"So, go ahead! Sue me! I'm not afraid! Sue me!"

By the way, OT.COM or any of the other posters have anything to do with the commentary above. If any scientologist loony wants to babble and yell their insanity at me, please contact me at my login name at hotmail dot com, and I'll be more than glad to argue and make fun of your crappy pseudo-relogion.

Isn't Mr Hubbard rumoured to have said 'forget writing, if you want to make a million dollars, start a religion', or words to that effect?

What I can't understand is WHY all these actors and singers are buying into that crap. Are they so hollow, feeling so devoid of purpose or worth in their lives that they are just reaching out for some kind of answer, and getting suckered in the process? I mean, if that is the case, why Scientology? Why not Kabballah or buddhism or some other spirtual path that at least makes sense?

I was at teh UK Premiere of Battlefield Earth. Mr Travolta was there and made a lovely speech before the movie about what it was trying to achieve, etc. It basically amounted to a pre-emptive apology for the shit he was about to inflict on us.

War does not make one great.

Oh, oh, no, no, not before you pay 2 thousand dollars. That's right, we'll only rid your body of those evil thetan spirits if you PAY for it. I wanna see cash or else Xenu's killed aliens will still make your life miserable. And don't you think about going to a serious professional like a psychiatrist. I mean, like, Freud, who the hell was he? Now, XENU, the alien from 2 billion years ago who trapped aliens, flew then in DC-9 airplanes to Earth - which didn't exist by then but ok - dropped then into volcanoes and threw atomic bombs on it and then grabbed their souls and got them to watch a 3D movie for days, now THAT is a fact my friend.

It's quite puzzling to wonder why Mr. Isaac Hayes, Tom Cruise and John Travolta wanted to be part of this scam - well I do understand Travolta, he never looked very bright, but - I mean... It's a well set scam, so I don't really blame them. They were brainwashed, basically.

There is an ever-growing cultural rift between normal people and the Hollywood crowd.
I think its reasonable to think they look at themselves as better than everyone else, so they need something "new and trendy" to believe. After all, most of the major religions of the world are over a thousand years old (Islam is going on 1400 years old, Christianity almost 2000 and Judaism is far older...I'm not even sure how old).
They look at scientology like a really expensive country club. Only the wealthy elite can pay enough money to become part of it, so its going to, by that reason, keep out the lower people from the other side of that rift I mentioned.

I agree that Isaac Hayes is making himself out as a hypocrite. Southpark has made fun of every major religion at some point or another and he said nothing, then they make fun of scientology and he decides to quit.

He can dish it out, but he obviously cannot take it.

Since I've now got a bit of a forum for this, I wanted to give my opinion of Tom Cruise.
Over the past few months...maybe a year he's dropped Nicole Kidman (What the heck is wrong with HIM??), hooked up with a 22-year old Katie Holmes, done a few midling quality movies and jumped up-and-down on Oprah's couch.
Previous to that time period, things were rather quiet.
I think there is a very easy explanation for his actions. Its called a Mid-Life Crisis.
Thank you for your time, I had to get that out of my system.

Tiranic alien warlords are as important to Scientology as God and Jesus are for christianity.

I'm not in favour of any sort of religious persecution, but have to hand it to Parker & Stone for their even-handed offensiveness.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

What a friggin baby. Make fun of his cult and he quits, understandable to a degree, but his excuse for doing so is completely ridiculous, as much fun as they've made of other religions and religious groups over the years.

I don't think you know the half of it. If I could remember the whole story that I'VE heard, I'd tell you, but I've chosen to block it from my mind. I believe in some conspiracies, but this stuff is just off the wall nuts.
