During the early 90s Me and my dad used to go to a Sc-Fi/Comic con roughly once every six months. That's where I met Dave Prowse. Good memories of those times. As well as back issues of titles I was into, I was also trying to by back all the Star wars toys that I foolishly gave away years earlier when I had 'grown out of' them. This was again before the days of the internet and ebay - you had to hunt for those suckers.

I remember being in awe in the dealer's rooms. So much to buy, and no money!! Now that I can afford stuff the cons stink! One of the favorites I remember was watching the original Trek "blooper reels". It was amazing to see them and I laughed no matter how many times I saw the ones in being show. At that time, comics/sci-fi was LIFE. There was nothing else. There's a line in Spider-Man II, where Peter is talking to Aunt May, and May is telling him about the value of the hero, how people talk of waiting in line for hours to meet the person who taught them to hold on for another couple of seconds, etc. That line resonates with me because of all the time I stood in line to meet those people. A lot of them turned out to be jerks, but most of them were cool. I wish a smaller con would come around again so I can take my kids, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Cretinous villain!!!!

Not *another* title!!!! Bah!

lol

I finally read 'Supreme Power' 1-18 this past weekend. Very good and thanks for the recommendation! Of course now I'll need to get the mini-series that follow it to stay caught up. As I kow you liked SP, I'd highly recommend you read (if you haven't already) three series from creator Rick Veitch- 'Maximortal', 'The One' and 'Brat Pack'. They all cover similar ground as SP and are even darker in many ways. SP is *maybe* a bit derivative of these series too but I'm *sure* JMS never read any of them.

Those sound pretty cool. I'll have to check them out...Ha. Caught me for a change!

BTW: Finished IC #5 the other day and also all of the tie-ins for the most part. This is the best thing DC's done since COIE, IMO. I'm looking forward to the Checkmate and Shadowpact ongoing series spinning off from IC.

Possible Spoiler/Theories on IC:

I'm of the opinion that somehow the "negative space" of the anti-matter universe is really what changed Alexander Luthor and SuperBoy. I think we'll find out that the long term exposure to it is what made them wig out. It's a little too much to believe that all of them would flip simultaneously.

Well, can you really blame Alex for his actions? He was born on a dying world, then rapidly aged by the Monitor to save the universe...

And for what? He percieves himself as morally untouchable because he never HAD to grow up and learn, never had to question anything. He was essentially bred to save a universe that went and screwed itself over with darkness, and he never really had a choice in the matter.

On the other hand, I figure they might explain the darkness of the universe itself as a result of the "perfection" of the little Paradise Alex built. I wonder how he would react to learning that all the bad things that have happened to the universe are HIS fault.

(Superboy Prime, on the other hand, has no excuse. He was raised by the Kents on Earth Prime for the first 16 or so years of his life. He is actually older than Alex Luthor, physically at least. Emotionally, yeah, he's about two. And I hate him.)

I can *almost* buy him going bad if there's a good reason but so far its just been explained as 'well, he's a Luthor!' and I hate that.

Yep- no excuse! They better have a pretty damn good reason to have him acting that way and to do all the things that've happened to E2 Superman.. more reaosn than just 'we needed a reason for the crisis and this fit.'

Chalts! I'm surprised at you, being a fellow conservative and all...

Your point about Alexander is akin to the "I had a rough childhood your honor and THAT's why I killed all 15 of those people!". Please, oh please. I agree with GC on this. "Well, he's a Luthor" just ain't cutting it.

And according to the interviews over at Newsarama the official line does seem to be:

Q: And at the bottom of the page? Luthor…

A: Is a dick. As the Psycho Pirate learns, Lois and Superboy Prime were simply two pieces on the board that he moved in order to get what he wanted. Of course, the Superboy comment will come back to bite him in the ass later, as DC’s Dan Didio pointed out in this week’s Crisis Counseling - Luthors always –and occasionally fatally – underestimate Superman.

This really makes me wonder if the current editorial staff read and understood COIE or if they just skimmed it and took note of names.

And further:

NRAMA: Sticking with Superboy - the battle between Superboy and everyone. From your eyes, how did it get out of control, so quickly?

DD: Superboy is a teenager raised in isolation, with raging hormones, a huge chip on shoulder and the powers of a god. He never learned how to keep his powers or emotions in check, so when confronted, the situation escalated and he had no idea on how to defuse it. Think of a situation where you, as a teenager, lost your temper. Now imagine you have the power to crush a planet. Do you think that situation would have ended differently?

So its *hormones*. Oh THAT explains it!

NRAMA: In line with looking at what’s coming, when do we get the motive behind Alex Luthor’s madness? He’s single-minded on his quest for a “perfect” earth. Why?

DD: He’s a Luthor and Luthors are always right. Or at least, they think they are.

You know, about five minutes after posting that earlier, I realized I'd left out something important.

I'm NOT defending Alex Luthor's actions at all! I'm simply saying I understand WHY he would want to act. He's just going about it in a way that would shame Lex himself. I'm fully looking forward to Dick and Conner kicking his butt next issue.

Has anyone picked up any of DC's Absolute editions? They've done Watchmen and Hush so far, and are planning Kingdom Come in....May I think.

Yeah, I picked up Absolute Watchmen. Looks great on my bookshelf, but I still think it was too expensive.

Other than the hefty pricetags, what do the 'Absolute Editions' offer? I have the original Grafiti Graphics 'Watchmen' slipcase HC and the 'Kingdom Come', 'Dark Knight Returns' and 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' slipcase HCs... what's the scoop on these new ones?

It's significantly larger, for one thing, pages being almost 50% bigger, and the colours have been "remastered," so they really pop. Also, there's about 50 pages of supplementals like script excerpts and panel descriptions. It's really just a collectors item, but it's worth it.

IC Question **SPOILER**

Any thoughts on the fate of Wally West and his family? Also, who will assume the role of Flash now?

All I have is hopes- I hope they don't kill Wally *just* to fullfill some sort of 'we must kill a Flash' role in a 'Crisis' series. I HOPE they don't attempt to bring Barry back as that would kill what respect I have for DC (even if its another 'Barry's back- no its a fake, blah blah blah' story). But I *imagine* that they'll sacrifice Wally and make Bart Flash. What do you think?

I haven't really kept up with Wally as Flash too much. When that series first started back around 88, I LOVED it. Totally hooked. It was cool because they focused on his relationships and life troubles, etc, not just his powers and the rogue's gallery. I picked up a few copies last year when I got back in and was unimpressed. IMO: Any change is a good change as long as it's not cheesy like you suggest (mandatory Crisis execution of a Flash).

Well... SPOILER.

At the end of IC#5, from the design of the belt the Flash that emerged infront of Superboy Prime was clearly Barry. What he's doing alive and how long he will stay alive is anyone's guess. I jsut hope Wally returns eventually.

I just now finished DC's 'The New Frontier' and I have to say... wow. I really, really liked it. And its funny because even though it came out a bit ago is very much resonates in sync with the themes behind 'Infinite Crisis', especially in the afterword in TPB Vol. 2. This being that the iconic heroes don't need to be grim and gritty to speak to the human condition- sometimes just being able to overcome petty emotions and bickering and being able to work together is enough. Highly recommended read.

And JS... glad you have more to read to keep you busy.
