Editing with After Effects?

Being PC based, I don't have access to Final Cut Pro, which seems to be the edit tool of choice for our Mac people.

What are people's throughts on editing films (HuffyAVIs) in After Effects - after all, it offers you plenty of image manipulation options if you are really trying to alter a film. Obviously the rendering times would be rather large, but I certainly find it more user friendly than Premiere.

Or cany anyone suggest any other PC (win2K) editing programs.

Cheers!

I would suggest AVID if you can't get Final Cut Pro. It is about the same price and works just as well.

Good question. I recall running it one time, but that may have been on my XP laptop. I'll have to check.

[EDIT] Hmmm, I don't see it anymore. I wonder if it was on my failed hardrive...

If you just want to cut shots together and resync audio, I find Premiere to be a much easier tool to use. But After Effects is great for doing everything else. Even the video transitions are better quality. I usually do all my DVD menus in After Effects.

[X0 Project]
[Backstroke of the West DVD]

You can certainly use After Effects to edit if you wish, but its simply not designed to edit. Premiere would be your best bet to edit, then do individual shots on After Effects. That's the way I've tended to do it in the best. But, if you find AE more user-friendly, you're certainly welcome to do so.

If you just had a software version of it you must have downloaded it. Bad MeBeJedi, Bad! (You know when you type something like that it just isn't as funny as when you say it to someone in person)

AVID needs a dongle to work on a computer and yes you need XP to run it. Without the dongle you can't get the software to work legaly.

The real question is why are you running a windows computer without XP?

I like 2000. I don't upgrade just for sh*ts and giggles.

Ditto - my work computer isn't doesn't have an internet connection, and there's no way I'm going to fork out £80 for a bicer GUI which I would switch off anyway. Win2K all the way baby!

Zion,

I also use After Effects for all my menus, hence I'm more comfortable with that.

Thanks for the feedback guys - no doubt things will change by the time I get around to doing anything!

LOL, I know, I know. Everyone kept telling me how great it was, and I loaded it up to see what it could do, but to be honest, I just never tried to do anything with it. Vegas has done everything I've ever asked of it, so I really done need or feel like learning a whole new system. At this point, it'll just slow me down and keep me from finishing the stuff I need to get done (Silverwook, you and my older sister in Missouri are at the top of my list. )

Hell, I just found out that Vegas lets me make an AVI with an Alpha channel for transparency. That's going to make a lot of cool stuff much easier to do.

[EDIT] Is it just me, or are the ads on these pages context-sensitive? That's pretty slick!
