Zathura

Would any of you guys recommend this movie to me? I've heard it's got a lot of cool classic blue/green-screen model effects, and just a plain, good story. Can someone give me a rundown on what this film is, and whether it's worth going to see?

Yeah DAYV- where's your review??? I've been debating seeing this as well.

We rented it a couple of weeks ago, and I absolutely dug the hell out of it. It's a fun sci-fi adventure that's kid-friendly but scary when it needs to be.

It's easy to tell that Jon Favreau was a kid of my generation who fell irretrievably in love with movies because of Lucas and Spielberg's work in the 70s and early 80s. There are more miniatures and on-set practical effects in Zathura than most similar modern movies. I mean, rod puppets, man-in-suit robots and monsters, and exploding miniatures are vanishing arts that are expertly used here. CG was only used where it wasn't feasible to do convincing practical work or to add an extra level of enhancement to physical effects, and it shows on the screen because things just look real.

I don't know if I'll pick up the DVD on sale or wait for Blu-Ray, but I'm almost definitely gonna buy it at some point.

I for one enjoyed it. Like Enzo said, it all but seemed to be a kids movie from the 80's. It had that quality to it.

Nothing could ever possibly be better than Snakes on a Plane.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Caught a bit of Zathura in Wal*Mart the other night. It looks really great, and even my kids thought it was pretty cool. If I was still working in a theatre, I probably would have taken them to see it.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

When I saw the preview a few months ago, I though 'WTF? Jumanji in space without Robin Williams - whatever'. But you guys are really selling it. I think I will check it out.

Seriously YIYF I haven't seen the flic but saw a 'making-of' and I was very impressed both by what I saw and by Favreau's dedication to old-style effects. I need to watch it soon!

Yeah, I'm definitely gonna check it out. I had no idea that Jon Favreau was involved. That guy is so money.

Double-down, baby. Double-down!

Speaking of, do you get his show 'Dinner For Five' in the UK? Great show and if you're not familiar with it its Favreau and four guests for various media having dinner and shooting the shit about basically whatever comes to mind. AND its co-produced by Favreau's good friend Peter Billingsly, aka Ralphie from 'A Christmas Story' and aka Messy Marvin! Billingsley also co-produced Zathura!

We don't get that show, but it sounds fantastic. I will endevour to see it.

Man, if Favreau is doing films like Zathura, and doing it well by all accounts, that opens up a whole world of possibilities. People with an actual ove of a genre making movies in that genre? A crazy idea but it just might work. It's like Kevin Smith directing a Star Wars film.

heh, that remindes me. Did anyone see the apprentice episode (i dont usually watch it, but happened to catch it once) where they had to promote this movie, and the one team pronounced the name wrong while pitching their idea to the studio/producers (whoever they presented it to) was pretty funny, they didnt win.

anyway, i was just thinking how they should have gotten you guys to promote it, probably would have had a bigger release
I wasnt really interested to see it before (kinda had the same feeling as YIYF) but def think ill check it out when i get a chance.

In case you didn't know, Favreau's currently in pre-production on "John Carter of Mars" or whatever the title winds up being, based on books by Edgar Rice Burroughs about a Civil War vet who winds up on Mars, fights lizard-men and gets it on with the refreshingly human-looking Princess before being reincarnated as an old-money doctor in 1990s Chicago. Well, more or less.

I don't know if it had already been and gone while I was in the US, but it's coming out here in cinemas soon. It's crazy, some movies we get earlier, others later, and most of the crap ones, not at all (unless they make money).

Zathura was released in theaters in the US in November, right between Chicken Little and Harry Potter. Between the not-so-hot marketing and a release date sandwiched by two automatic kid's hits, it hardly stood a chance at the box office. Pity, it could have done pretty well.

It came out here last month, so I should still be able to catch it (although it was marketed badly here too).
