Wow, it's amazing how he can work that other footage into the movie. Especially Natalie Portman's stuff!
So does she have a lightsaber now or something?

Well, he hasn't "worked" anything into the actual movie, Hal. It was created BEFORE Episode II ever came out, and it was based on rumors about who would be in it and so forth. It was pure speculation about what the movie might be like and doesn't reflect an actual fan-edit of the film.

And musicman, that's a good suggestion about Jar-Jar. I'm not sure if the right footage exists, but we can try it.

One of the things that always bugged me about the end fight in TPM is how Obi-wan just waits there while Qui-gon gets killed. Why didn't he cut through the door or use the force to open it or something. Couldn't something be done to tighten up that scene?

I have a question about the ROTS edit and ROTJ edit. In Rots are you adding back the Rebelion formation scenes? And for ROTJ there are some great ideas that could work in the ROTJ fan edit thread, thought you might wanna check them out.

The early rebellion scenes are good material, and with a few cuts here and there they'd definitely be a good addition to Episode III.

As for RotJ, we're way ahead of the game in that department, as most of the changes suggested in these new theads have already been covered in this one.

We're thinking of jumping right to ROTJ after Episode I. What does everyone think?

Hmm, I personally think you'll get into the atmosphere of the movies better if you do it chronologically. That's one of the things that went wrong with the PT in the first place. It would be a more coherent saga than it was before and speaking as a fan, I think that's what works best.

Yes, but then they have to wait for SOTDS before embarking on ROTS, and the ROTJ edit is alreday planned. There hasn't yet been a major fan edit of ROTJ and it would be nice to see one.

Indeed. But the project is about the saga in general, and not just ROTJ. I think it would be a shame to risk doing what Lucas ended up doing, albeit in a considerably shorter timeframe, of course. If you've already got your version of the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker-story in the back of your heads when you eventually start working on ROTJ, you'll probably have a ton of new ideas to put into it.

Besides, I think most of us agree that what needs instant fixing are the prequels. The original movies are pretty much flawless, except for the continuity errors brought in by the advent of the prequels. And I would love to see your take on a better PT first!

This was discussed but it was ultimately decided having Qui-Gon fade away in the fire (the only plausable time for him to do so) would cause more confusion than clarification. It's established that Jedi don't naturally dissapear when they die in II and III. Qui-Gon being the first Jedi in history to do so would certainly be cause for a reaction from the Jedi, of which there is none.

Guys,

Here's a really crazy idea. I'm sure it'll be shot down, but here goes anyway:

Don't destroy the Death Star at the end of A New Hope.

I know there are a million reasons this won't work. (What is the Death Star doing during ESB? Why is it being rebuilt in Jedi? What's there to celebrate at the end of ANH?) But what if someone here could find a way to pull it off?

We all know George Lucas only squeezed the destruction of the Death Star into Episode IV because he didn't know if the other movies would be made. By removing this from Episode IV, it might help to strengthen some of the weaknesses of Episode VI. ROJ just feels so rehashed as it is.

So?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I absolutely love the boldness of this idea. I wish it could work, but I don't think it can. Presumably you still want a climax to each movie, despite the "saga" idea. Well, without the destruction of DS1, ANH doesn't have one.

You'd have to cut it off after they rescue Princess Leia and they move to Hoth because they find the tracking device on board the Falcon? No, wait - there is no Yavin base, they escape with Leia en route to Hoth - end of movie. Then the battle of Yavin is used at the end of ROTJ?

If there was going to be an edit of all three movies into one big 60s style Ben-Hur epic, with an intermission and an overture,maybe you could do exactly that. All the establishing shots of the incomplete Death Star could be moved to the first movie and vice versa. Maybe when Obi-Wan is shutting off the tractor beam, he's also sabotaging something that will delay the completion...

Erik, I think that's a wonderful idea. For a re-write, or re-imagining of the saga. The saga's original climax was in fact to be the destruction of the Death Star, as has already been pointed out. But looking at the saga we have to work with, this is completely impossible. I do remember a poster called Obi-Wan Spicoli who had mentioned something similar to this before, but he's dissapeared and I can't find his thread. He was planning on editing the saga into 9 shorter episodes, and had some pretty radical ideas. If someone can deduce a way to make this work, it would certainly be an interesting "Infinities" saga. But really I just don't see any way to accomplish it.

I really like the Ben-Hur style epic idea, with an overture and intermission. That might be another great edit idea.
It'd be interesting to observe a first-time viewer.

The idea of switching Death Star footage is a great idea. Not sure if it would work 100% but its worth a try.

This is a very intriguing idea, Erik. Something I've never considered. Not sure if I'd want to try it for the saga edit, but maybe for one with a different theme. A bit radical, but that's what we like on this thread.

I like CC's suggestion about an "Inifinities" edit, where we take all available footage and create a totally different story out of it. Anything would be possible. Maybe something to think about for the future...

In the meantime, though, since that isn't really doable for this project, if you could somehow establish with some dialogue somewhere that the DS (my filter blocks out D e a th...ugh) is their big plan, and the intention from the start is to make more than one--perhaps eventually a whole armada of DS's or something--then it might help make the ROTJ DSII work better. So when the DSII comes along, they've probably already been working on it--since the first one was the initial DS, they learned from the construction of that and are now ready to kick it up a notch and then begin the whole bunch of DS's, starting with the DSII. Does that make sense? I don't know if that would be doable either, but for this saga edit, it might be a good way to go.

I also really like this idea, Erikstormtrooper. You would be absolutely free to do whatever you want in such an edit and as you're going to chop away the opening crawl, you could even include a prologue as well. This would result in a 3h+ movie which would be great to watch I think.

This has bothered me as well, MM, and rectifying it would go a long way in improving RotJ. A line in RotJ's revamped opening crawl would help. I was thinking of something along the lines of: "Eager to extinguish the ever growing flame of Rebellion, the GALACTIC EMPIRE has hastened their dual construction on the second DEATH STAR."

Also: "This turn of events is unfortunate. We must accelerate our plans," (now deleted from Episode I) will most likely be finding it's way back into the saga, and would help this plotpoint as well...
