If you're not a comics fan, I'd suggest the novel American Gods, which is fantastic. If you are a comics fan, I'd suggest the Sandman Trade Paperbacks, starting with vol 1: Preludes and Nocturnes (although the series hits it's stried on the 3rd one). If you're on the fence about comics I'd suggest you try to pick up the 6th volume called Fables and Reflections, which is a great collection but particularly the last story called "Ramadan", which I think is one of the best stories I've ever read, in print or comics (and it's beautifully illustrated).
