Violence in Video games a fad?

I've been noticing lately that people are just making these violent games that suck horribly. I haven't seen hardly many good violent games that aren't made by rockstar.

Violent entertainment in general is of poor quality and mass appeal. Young guys like stuff that is unneccesarily violent, be it music, movies or games, and the majority of entries in any of these categories is usually of poor quality since its mostly made for demographic appeal and with little intellectual substance. Music and movies have been around for a while so the many crappy, poor-quality songs and flicks dont really draw attention but video games are relatively new so we notice this more. I mean, i know gory games have been popular since the early 90's but the sophistication of the latest generation of gaming has allowed for more realistic violence that can now emulate its feature-film counterparts so there is an upsurge.

So its a trend, and it may temper down a little bit, but it'll always be around. Thats my take, anyway.

I like when violence is in some movies (like Tarrantino and Cult movies and movies with meanings) but most are just dumb action flicks with no intelligence to it.

What exactly to you mean by violent music? Is that in a lyrical sense, or a musical sense?

There have been plenty of horrible violent video games made. Ever since Mortal Kombat hit the arcades back in the early 90's, there have been a ton of crappy games of the same genre. Primal Rage comes to mind as being one of the more controversial, as well as a SegaCD game called Night Trap (I think) - the one where you could break into houses and rape women.

My Projects:
[Holiday Special Hybrid DVD v2]
[X0 Project]
[Backstroke of the West DVD]
[ROTS Theatrical DVD]

Night trap was the one you were protecting girls from vampires that were breaking into the house.

But once you kill all the vampires, you gotta do something. Right?

Author

Yeah they did tend to lie about that stuff back then.

there was a rape involved in night trap. I dont think you see the actual act but you do see men in ski mask breaking into a womans bedroom and terrorizing her IIRC.

It's not violence in general that is the 'fad'... it's these acursed "Gangsta" games.

A bunch of idiot companies thought they could cash in on the success of San Andreas by making crapy gangsta games. Well, GUESS AGAIN, STUPID! San Andreas sold because it was FUN, because it had a HUGE, HUGE world to explore and because it was labeled Grand Theft Auto. It's not the "gritty" urban theme, people. That is just a THEME for the story, not the appeal of the game. [/mini-rant]

This thread gave me deja-vu. Like, I knew EXACTLY what people were going to say.

Weird.

^^^Them's fightin' words!

"it was FUN, because it had a HUGE, HUGE world to explore"

...and rape, and pillage, and destroy.......sounds like they turned Christopher Columbus' travels into a game.

to me violence in video games and in movies is a fantasy of mine and im sure of many that we all have....

violence means nothing unless it takes place in real life...
violent movies and games are just there to satisfy our hunger..
very much like adult movies are there to satisfy a need... there's no message, they don't influence me to go out and have dirty sex with many women...

i know for a fact that i would never be able to point a gun at another human being unless it were to protect myself or a loved one...
however i always have my matrix/terminator fantasies where i would love to take out a group of bad people with almost every weapon known to man. many would think me crazy to say that, but i know many of my fellow male friends would also agree with me and say they've had those same kinda daydreams.

Maybe we all have that part of us that wants to be an action hero or a superman of some sort.
its all a fantasy.

but is it a fad?
perhaps. I feel the real reason it has gain so much popularity in games lately is simple. technology!
don't get me wrong, i loved playing shootem up games when i was younger, however lately they've raised that bar far and beyond. if you get your hands on the right game with the right hardware you get the most realistic fantasy out there, and there's no real gun involved.

It's about bringing it as close to reality as possible and then stepping back a little.
but thats how i feel.

Well said, I do agree with the whole "crazy matrix" fantasy. I kill people sometimes in my head. Well I used to. Now I'm a pacifist. But the point is, you're 100% correct.

I agree with Luke. I'm a very peaceful guy in real life, but I have the most fun in GTA being a real "cop killa." The missions themselves are fun, but I often just create scenarios where I get the cops after me and see how long I can survive in a bloody chase. Think of those "Real Life Whatever Cop/Criminal Chase 5!" shows that they have on FX. Would I ever want to get in a car chase that would result in the deaths of hundreds of people and millions of dollars of collateral damage? Of course not! Fantasy. Not high art. Not fantastic storytelling. Just escapism. Nothing wrong with that.

But it's a very good outlet for frustration as well. I've gotten a lot of anger out by popping in a GTA or some similar game and just going to town killing people walking down the street. Does that make me insane? I don't think so. The fake violence allows me to vent in a safe way rather than taking it out by yelling or otherwise being mean to friends and family. Which seems healthier?

My debate thread about violence vs. non-violence may interest some people on this one. I'd like to see even MORE people speaking their opinions on it so head on over!

I am living proof that violent video games do nothing to a healthy mind. I frequently play the likes of GTA:VC, Counterstrike, Virtua Cop 1 & 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2, etc., etc. And the only person I've ever had a punch-up with in my entire life is my younger brother. That's it.

Of course, I do think that a lot of games are getting ridiculous. Never liked Mortal Kombat or it's 50-gazillion variations. That 50 Cent game looks like a steaming pile of gangsta crap. I wouldn't find it hard to believe that there probably are kids out there who can't separate fact from fiction...

The thing is, conflict is the key to any good story or videogame (with a few obvious exceptions, like maybe Tetris), so chances are, there's gonna be fighting in some capacity.

We had a debate about this in my psycholgy class.

The side who argued that there was no correlation between violence and video games destroyed the other side.
