Oh, yeah. That's right. I forgot that you were previously one of those who bashed it. Actually, I'm still getting used to you constantly praising it. It's... uncanny.

The head men at FOX should have their balls ripped off for cancelling that show.

sorry for resurrecting this thread but i only got to watch the movie this week (in UK the dvd came out last monday) and there is something i was wondering about and i'd like to know what you guys think:

MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD

YE HAVE BEEN WARNED

HERE GOES:

so, at the end their big mission is to get that recording aired all over the 'verse to expose what the Alliance wants to hide. to do that they need the help of Mr. Universe. It struck me that you could say that the recording could represent the movie itself and the Alliance Fox. For the internet 'browncoats' Fox is the bad guy because it cancelled the tv show. the movie got financial help from Universal (aka Mr. Universe?? plus he got easily bribed with money...and we know that money is all important to production studios) moreover, Mal could not use the main console (the television medium?) but had to go to another unit (cinema?) to get his message broadcasted.
i'm the first to say that it's a bit far-fetched, but the similarities are striking, don't you think?

THE END

That's actually a pretty good theory HG! It may not have been at the top of Joss' thoughts but it very well could have been bleeding through from his subconcious.

From Gaffer Tape:

I'm now not sure if I want to see anymore Firefly material because I just don't see how it will be as good without... well, you know.

Actually my thought was that you could do a couple of 'fill-in' movie/specials... focusing on what happened between the end of Firefly and the start of Serenity. That way ALL the cast could be there just as they were originally and other characters' stories could be focused on.

Speaking of- I think I've mentioned this elsewhere but I'd like to know what various people here think: From watching Firefly *first* before the film, I perceived the show to be mainly about Mal- about what led him to be where he is and about how his convictions and his new 'family' would help him find his place in the universe (though he may not have known he was looking for it). I saw River's story as being important, but just one of the tales of the extended family and essentially a plot device that would lead to a season's worth of stories.
A friend who watched and loved 'Serenity' but never saw Firefly perceived the overall story as being about River, and Mal and the rest were just devices needed to tell River's tale. This would again cast Mal in a 'Han Solo' type supporting role to River's 'Luke Skywalker'.

So my question is- if the series had lasted, whose story do you think it would have been?

greencapt: what happened between the tv show and the movie has already been told in the serenity comics so it's not very probable that they could reuse that timeframe

i think mal is the main one in the tv show, in the cast pics he is mostly in the foreground and episodes like 'out of gas' clearly show that. after all he assembled the crew.
but i can understand how people could think River is more important in the movie, it's probably the marketing's fault (on the cover of the dvd River is in the foreground on the front cover, she's twice on the back cover and she is on the pic on the spine). which is partly true imo, since she does trigger the event in the movie but eventually it is Mal who 'saves the day'. so i guess it would definitely have been about Mal.

as a side note, in the introduction to the movie Whedon mentions the films website and calls it www.cantstopthesignal.com, but now if you type it it redirects you to www.serenitymovie.com. my guess is they wanted to call it that at the beginning but maybe it was too obscure to find on google so they changed to the more straightforward url.

Yeah, I'm thinking you have a good hypothesis there, Han's Girlfriend. I was going to mention the cantstopthesignal.com stuff, but you beat me to it.

I guess this comes from me seeing Firefly first, but Mal will always be the main character. I don't even have to explain why he is in the TV series because there's no argument there. In the movie, Nathan Fillion gets top billing both in the opening and closing credits, and the movies posters/DVD box. While that's stupidly not always indicative of the lead character (what are some movies thinking?!), I feel that it is here. When we first board Serenity, we follow Mal through the ship, introducing us to all the characters. Joss even filmed an additional scene between Mal and River, right before they get off at Lilac, to make it more obvious to the viewers that River, who up to that point could have been mistaken as the lead character, "passes the movie off to Mal." All the confrontations with the Operative are against Mal, including the final battle. The two scenes with Shepherd Book are opposite Mal. He gives two big monologues to the rest of the cast, including River: the, "I'm not waiting around for the Alliance to choose mine," speech and the, "I aim to misbehave." And at the end of the movie, we once again follow him through the ship, talking to the Operative, Zoe, Inara, and, finally, River.

I'm not trying to diminish River's importance in the movie, but Mal is, and always has been, the hero, the protagonist of this 'verse.

I haven't read them but remember that many people who saw the film hadn't yet seen the TV series and have probably even less likely read the comics so the area is still probably ripe for consideration. Also, how many comics did he write for it? Just the three? I would hope that there were a LOT more stories to be told!

I agree as I said... I guess my friend just found it easier to relate to River's character.

And the Serenity comics weren't even really that good. Or at least I didn't think so. They sorta seemed a cop-out on how to go from the blue-hands to the operative
Author

yeah i was a bit disappointed that the blue hands guys didn't come up in the movie at all. i thought that'd be one of the story lines the movie would complete. same for Book: they implied a couple of times that he wasn't what he seemed (like when he is wounded and the alliance ship takes him to be cured) but nothing was said about that in 'serenity'.

haven't read the comics yet, but i really want to!

Yeah, there were a lot of unanswered questions, and I understand the rationale, since it was already hard enough to do everything in Serenity that they did. Any more storylines to add in would have been nearly impossible and detracted from the main plot. I do wish to read the comics, though.

I'm glad this thread has just popped up again because I've just finished watching the last two episodes of Firefly, and just watched the begining of Serenity. And what I want to know is, what happened?
It was like they re-wrote some of the characters. The doctor for example, he seemed like a different person.
Granted, I did fall asleep so I haven't watched the film to the end yet, but man, it seems like a different program.
Or is it just me? It was my ganja and pizza night after all. And a bottle of wine!
Maybe I should just watch the film again tomorrow, with a clear head.

Well, there is development. Over the short course of the series, Simon became more accustomed to his life "in the black." His wardrobe got more relaxed. He fought off an assassin. And there's all that time in between. I found it really cool that Simon was punching Mal in the movie, when, in the episide Serenity, it was the other way around. It was like they had come full circle.

The biggest thing that annoys me about Serenity is the time issue. In the movie, Mal had said that it had been eight months since they took in Simon and River (and Book). And, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd always heard that the movie takes place six months after the end of the series. And that would mean that those 14 episodes all took place in the span of two months. While it seems unlikely that the development of the characters could have happened in that span of time, not to mention all those different situations, it kinda cheapens it to me to think that they had such little time together. And, also, in Trash, Mal tells Monty that the events in Our Mrs. Reynolds took place half a year prior to then. So I'm confused.

Maybe the series takes place over a period of seven months or so, and the movie takes place a month after the end of the series.

In situations like this, what is stated in canon (the canon length of time between Trash and Our Mrs. Reynolds) should count more than what promotional materials say.

Like the levels of canon in Star Wars.

i also noticed that Simon changed a bit. not only from his develpment over time but also from the pre-credits sequence: he almost looks like an action hero there and from the series that's the lastthing i would say about him!
also, i had the feeling in the series that Simon and Mal were becoming kinda friends but their dialogue at the beginning is pretty harsh. and i feel that in general the chracters have been neglected in favour of action, but i guess that they couldn't do much about it in a movie destined for the cinema.
and about the time line thing: from the story - especially if you consider the time Inara would need to settle in the school and Book would need to establish a mission - i would say that at least 3 to 4 months must have been in-between. but i'm not sure, haven't been paying much attention to that when i was watching it.

Considering Inara's.... profession...

Um.. what would her "school" be teaching?

She's talking about the companion training house that Inara went to after leaving Serenity and leaving during the movie to rejoin with Serenity. And, well, yeah, the purpose of instruction is quite obvious, especially in one of the deleted scenes.

Her license to companion, as Wash would say! And even though he questions the word's usage as a verb, I'm sure we all know that that's actually an infinitive! ^_~

It's one of the things I haven't watched the series enough to understand...

Why exactly does Mal let a "companion" on his ship... and why isn't she sort of, you know, shunned and all for being what she is.

Wow. Sorry Chaltab. I assumed you were a Firefly fan. If you do want the answers, I'll go ahead and give them to you. If you're waiting to see it yourself, don't read the rest of my post.

In this view of the future, companions are registered with a guild and are much higher class than prostitutes or whores (non-guild whores being shown in one episode as a completely separate entity), being akin more to geishas. So Inara is actually of a higher social standing than Mal, being the captain of a cargo ship. Therefore, it is advantageous for Mal to have a companion on board to bring the ship some respectability. In Out of Gas, it is shown that Inara used this knowledge as a bargaining chip to get her a better price on the shuttle. Specifically, in the pilot episode, Serenity, Mal states to Shepherd Book, "There are some settlements wouldn't let you dock without a decent companion onboard." The advantage for Inara is that she gets to expand her client base by being constantly mobile. The basis for Inara leaving Serenity was established towards the end of Firefly but never given a chance to play itself out. It obviously happened at some point in between the end of the series and the beginning of the movie. But it wasn't just an idea that was originated solely for the movie.

EDIT: As far as being shunned, Shepherd Book shows some initial disapproval to her profession, but he doesn't let it interfere with his personal relationship with her.
