I had no choice in the matter. He wouldn't do anything without me giving him a reason. I said cancel. He said why. I said "because." And he went into his spiel anyway.

NEVER give AOL a reason why you are cancelling an account. I used to work for a company that also did ISP services and they always said that any reason you can give them will trigger a sales script tailored to the reason your leaving. Its best to just insist on cancelling and refuse to give them a reason.
Even yet, I have a co-worker who was on AOL, and even after he cancelled they still billed him. He finally had to block them at the bank from doing automatic withdrawls.

Then whatever he says, tell him thats the reason you're canceling.
or you could just tell them cause you dont like him. not the company but the person you are actually talking to.
there are plenty of ways you could f with him while canceling.
I say, if they are gonna be dicks about letting you cancel you should be a dick right back. I kinda want to make an AOL account just so I can cancel and have a good time with the person. I understand its their job and thats what they are told to do, but they should have a little common sense and know when it doesnt matter and to stop trying to push the issue.
