I agree.

And thanks for the response, Ell.

Coov, I think I am going to cry. That is one good looking set

And Pepsi-dude, I'm glad you are bringing up the box ideas again. I think that there was a thread somewhere on this site long time ago. If there isn't one already, maybe you or Coov could start a seperate thread for it. I know I have several designs I could throw on there.

Not that many will care as much now but here is my dvd cover set. I started them all almost a year ago working from the Gonzo edition covers (not sure who made those) and it sort of took off from there as it was the base for my designs (along with the official dvds of course). For the original trilogy I used the artwork from the backs of the TR47-dvd art since they were just what I wanted to see. I then typed up new plot summaries. The prequels are a recent edition to the collection. I originally wasn't going to do them but I figured why the hell not. I don't consider them done enough yet but they are shaping out pretty nicely.

Aside from the idea for the cover art this next one is my own composition. It might need tweaking here and there but I'm fairly happy with it.The original cover art for the Supplemental Materials was really low quality so I went and fixed that.

This is sort of a remake of an older design. Same text/screens on the backside but I added new artwork and kept it consistent with the others.

Clone wars I wasn't too picky about and just used one of the older covers.

Here's a photo of the actual dvds. I like to stay consistent.

Hey pepsi, what printer do you use? I'm assuming those are printed on the dvd and not stuck on labels? I've used the R300 when doing my printing to discs (the R series seems to be a popular choice). But i noticed you had the printing right up to the edge and ive noticed (depending on the design) that sometimes im left with a small unprinted border around the edge (outer mostly, sometimes inner). I've gotten the settings pretty good, sometimes when the holes are already in the image it still gets problems, i think it works best to leave the image as a square.

anyway, starting to ramble. was wondering what your printing method for the discs was. maybe see if theres a better program out there than the one that came with the epson, or better settings for the size within the epson printer.

They are stick on labels. I can't afford a cd printer.

I get a lot of those problems as well with small borders around the edge. I usually have to print them a couple times, and my original images start off as squares to reduce that problem.

well those look pretty nice for stick on labels. You havent had any problems as far as playback goes with the labels on?

anyway, should check out the R200/R300 you can get them pretty cheap at times depending on sales/rebates and such. or referbished if you dont mind going that route. can prob get one of the models refurb for under $100, cant remember the best price i remember seeing, but im tempted to say around $89 (i know i saw that, not sure if ive seen lower)

I have, but I think that was due to the media I used. A couple of them were orignally on cheap dvdrs I got from my friend. I re-burned those though. I use "Fellowes NEATO" brand cd labels if that helps, along with their program "MediaFace II" or "MediaFace 4"

Wow, yeah, looks like the R300 can be had for $70 refurbed from Epson:

Rather tempting. How expensive is the ink on those bad boys?

Wow, flame war.

Coov is of course respected here because he does great work consistently, and he's done a lot of it. He's been prolific, and everything he's done has been well thought out and original. I particularly like his use of textures, which has forced a lot of us to rethink the way we're doing our covers! I've learned a lot from studying his concepts. The few covers I've done have been Coov ripoffs. =) There is a hell of a lot of great work being done in this thread, a hell of a lot of great covers, and I always like seeing what everyone is coming up with.

What I hate is people who respond badly to positivity. You're annoyed because people are complimenting someone? I mean, it's not as if every post here is people insulting each other and then Coov gets all the respect - no, there's a lot of complimenting going on here for everyone, and all of it is deserved.

It's a positive atmosphere. Deal with that.

Speaking of positive, I like your work Pepsi, minus the attitude. All your disc art is really good, but your choice on Deleted Magic - I know I have a personal stake in this disc, but it's the same as your ANH disc! Deleted Magic needs to be different - either minimalist, or having deleted scenes images on it. Check out my own official cover for example.

Okay anyway, a little while back I posted some big scans from a certain book, of some of the common Star Wars posters and a few more obscure ones.

Hey somebody, do some covers with these scans! I DARE YA!

It's not quite the same...deleted magic has a washed out effect. *shrug* I like it the way it is. Fantastic work btw OCP if you don't mind me saying!

Close-up: Not full size obviously.

I actually like the washed-out one, Pepsi. How did you acheive that effect? With the background desaturated and the characters in full color?

That's what I originally assumed, but if he did, the positioning is perfect.

It was actually faily easy to do. I had a layer on photoshop with the artwork in it, and a hue/saturation layer above it. I then added a layer mask to the hue/saturation layer and went over the part I didn't want black & white in black (when working in layer masks, you use black & white to determine what you want to show up).

http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/8916/pseffect7wm.jpg
red shows where to create a hue/saturation layer as well as other quite useful effects.

Wow Coov, your 'fancy' set has allways been my fav. of yours. this would make the most kick ass boxset, perfect for the XO project in my mind. Can you post the full thing and the empire of dreams cover thats in there

Pepsi, is there an easy way to highlight what you don't want desaturated in black? Or do you have to paint it out manually in black?

@Coov
I'm gonna be honest. The box is all nice n' fancy, but reusing the same image on every side seems kinda like a cheat, heh. How did you manage the 3D effect though? Just manually skewing everything in photoshop?

You can make a selection before changing the layer mask of the area that you do want to change, then use the brush tool or paint bucket tool to paint over the areas you want to take out of the layer mask.

Here's a nice little concept I just whipped up. Special Edition dvds for a quad case. I loved the art on the front so I tried it with the brushed metal effect. It came out kind of neat. Let me know if anyone is remotely interested in it or wants me to add to it.

PepsiOtaku, thank you for the instructions.

And I want to say it's always nice to see customs for the Special Editions because there aren't nearly as many for them as there are for the OOT - on this forum that makes sense, but you know what I mean.

In case you didn't know, that image is in fact only half. The right hand side features characters from the prequels. Given that, if there was a scan of that second half of the image it would allow someone like yourself to create a similar cover to the SE one you've shown, that would feature the prequels. Not asking for one, just letting you know. Though it would make for a neat join-up on the spines.

To contact me outside the forum, for trades and such my email address is my OT.com username @gmail.com

Oh wow! That would be fantastic if someone found or made a scan of that! I'll probably rework the above design a little later. It doesn't feel right as a cover right now and I need to improve the spine.
