Superman Movie — Page 8

I'm wondering if the Brando footage that Singer is using for the film is going to be the same as what's going into the "Donner Cut" of Superman II, or if there is enough to keep both films from having redundant footage.
I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

No, I don't believe so.

Yeah, so is it good?!

I watched Ang Lee's Hulk today, and in all honesty, I thought the criticism of this movie was completely unwarranted (too much sulking, not enough hulking - there was plenty of hulking!). I reckon Ang Lee 'gets' what comics and superheroes are all about. The movie gets *at least* three and a half stars outta me. Better than the Spiderman movies, definitely, IMHO.

To answer your question, yes, from what I saw of it the Flash series was pretty decent except for the occasionally lame punching bag sound effect.

It strikes me as funny that fans would say Ang Lee failed to make the Hulk a good/great film because he has no sense of visual style as he is too much into the human story. I always thought that was exactly the kind of person you'd want directing a superhero film - someone who can actually get at the human story beneath it all.

Well, his career should be doing well for a while after all the praise he got for Brokeback Mountain.

I personally hated the movie, and one of the reasons I hated it was because that, after doing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and things like that, it seemed like he tried to incorporate lots of mystical elements into a movie that really didn't need them, such as his father turning into a storm. That was a major WTF moment for me.

And it wasn't the fact that he added too much human elements, it's the fact that he failed to make it interesting. Batman Begins didn't have that problem.

I'd give it a 2 out of 5.

I don't agree with you, but I respect your reasons. I thought he had bags of visual style - especially with the multiple shots in frames on-screen. I loved the mysticism too - after all, aren't superheroes our modern mythology? The emotional focus of the movie was exactly what the Hulk needed, IMHO - the love story was unconventional and realistic - and isn't the Hulk all about repressed feelings and anger? I think so. Anyway, moving on.

I believe that, along with Batman, Batman Returns, and Superman I & II, Unbreakable ranks among the greatest comic-book movies ever created - and it's not even based on a real comic-book! I just saw it for the second (and third) time today, and I thought it was brilliant. Such awesome concepts...

Interesting. I *hated* 'Unbreakable (my one word review- 'Unwatchable'). Mainly this was due to my dislike of M. Night Ramalamadingdong's self-indulgent plotting and pacing which I feel he uses to cover up 'stories' which all revolve around one small idea, usually revealing in his 'surprise' endings. Maybe its just me- maybe the world needs more films with 15 minute shots of people walking down the stairs.

As for 'Hulk' I only recently saw it but would only rate it about 2 1/2 skulls out of 5. Well shot visually for the most part but I feel it suffers from too many chefs- Lee who may or may not have known the characters wanted to do one type of film. This kind of story works just fine in comics where you can have all sorts of specials and 'What If?'s or various single issues. The studio on the other hand wanted another 'Spider-Man', etc and there are *so* many scenes in the films which just scream to me 'studio interference' and I'm sure it was a constant battle... and when it comes down to it the studio pays the bills so they're allowed to do that. Many films mess around with the source material and I'm cool with that as long as it benefits and/or improves the story (ie Raimi decides not to make Peter Parker a scientific genius so the audience can relate to him a bit more, and therefore a non-genius would have had a hard time inventing webshooters- so they become organic to the spider bite).

I think I've reached a point with the new Superman film that I just don't care. None of the supposed plot elements sound all that interesting to me and none of the pictures released scream 'Superman' to me. I hope Routh is a great actor but to me he appears to have the same slack-jawed expression in every image. 'Duh I'm, uh, Superman right? Oh yeah- I'm wearing this suit.'

I'll probably not make any big effort to see this film. I wish that Singer would have just tried to make it his own instead of trying to make it a 'sequel' to Superman II.

1) I too have some difficulty M. Night Syama-insert-rest-of-name-here films. So far though the one film of his that I really hate is The Village - he didn't even wait till the end to reveal his big surprise. Funny how people went from calling M. Night the new Spielberg to calling Peter Jackson the new Spielberg...

2) Brandon Routh looks like he escaped from the set of a Power Rangers spin off. He doesn't look old enough to be "returning" from this six year absence that the filmmakers are boasting about.

3) I completely agree with you - Singer should have tried making his own Superman film instead of some kind of semi-sequel to the first two Superman films. Cutting loose from the earlier films was one of Batman Begins greatest strengths, that it wasn't just a rehash of stuff done by Burton and Schumacher, and it would benefit Superman even more, considering how badly the franchise went down in the first place.

The Village was lame, and so was Signs - great premises, but both lame. Sign's 'twist' about coincidence and destiny (all that shit about his wife's last words being to swing the bat and his kid's thing about leaving half-finished glasses of water around ultimately saving them from the aliens) were especially lame. And Macauley Culkin's bro was annoying as f**k in that too. But I thought Unbreakable was cool, and like RedBaron says, such a neat idea. I also really dug sixth sense when it came out, but haven't seen it in ages.

War does not make one great.

Signs was good!

Though I do agree about Brandon Routh looking way too young to be at least six years older than Reeve in Superman.

SIGNS WAS SO OVER HYPED AS A "SCARY" MOVIE. IT WAS ANYTHING BUT THAT. IMO, IT WAS M. NIGHT'S NEXT WORST MOVIE WITH THAT CREDIT GOING TO THE VILLAGE. I LOVED UNBREAKABLE. THIS WAS A REALISTIC (AS ONE COULD GET WITHOUT GOING OVER-THE-TOP) TAKE ON SUPER HEROES.
