Does anyone know if there are any differences between the 1992 Special Widescreen Collector's edition and the 1995 THX Widescreen edition?

I have seen some screen caps (don't remember what site) that show changes done to reduce the violence in the films. For example, blaster hits on stormtroopers have the flash and smoke reduced. Were these changes made prior to the SE in '97?

Yes, some of the chest explosions after the blaster hits in the original film have been reduced for the SE

If you're referring to the Laserdiscs, then yes. Not only are the latter from a different telecine, they have also had image filtration applied, noticeably temporal smoothing.

I believe those specific changes were made for the 2004 DVD, not the '97 SE.

Yes, the censoring has to rank as one of the worst changes. Especially after ROTS where the violence certainly isn't subdued! And the worst thing is that if you look on the DVDActive site, you'll notice they didn't even censor everything properly. I'm beginning to think ILM doesn't have a quality control department!
