I hear that. Moving to texas isn't a choice. It usually comes out of necessity.
The best way to get better at any instrument, in my opinion, is to take lessons. Try to find an instructor from the local university and you will improve by leaps and bounds. They will teach you all there is to know about correct technique, theory, chords, etc. Here, in the states, it costs anywhere between 25-35 bucks an hour, and it's usually an hour a week. The rest of the time is used practicing. In my heyday I practiced upwards to 4 hours a day. Today I'm lucky to do a couple hours a day.
Long story short, it's worth the money and time. You won't regret it.
