Idea: a Virtual "Lost Cut"

Now I know it isn’t feasibly possible to truely re-create the lost cut since probably 1/2 of the footage in it has nver been leaked. But has anyone ever thought, just for fun, to create a vitual version?

The Lost Cut was B&W and silent from what I remember reading. Didn’t feature any space battles and featured alternate “live” special effects for some shots.

Why not create a version in rough B&W, being creative using maybe footage from other films who knows, to create a rough cut. Maybe it would even run much shorter.

Maybe this is a dumb Idea. But we have so many fan edits of the SW films why not something weird like this?

Any thoughts??

How do you envision this being different from "Deleted Magic"? Much of what's available of the Lost Cut did find it's way into DM.

I was actually thinking about doing that sometime in the future. But that requires skills and programs. I'd be happy to consult on it though. This would be a great project. It would be sort of like Deleted Magic without the notes and BTS footage. You would need lots of WWII dogfight footage.

I've thought about this too, but it would be pretty impossible. The lost cut had no score, on-set sound (no effects), a bunch of alternate takes being used for the editing and a lot of unfinished special effects shots that we wouldn't have access to. You could roughly approximate it by taking all of tha available footage from it (using Deleted Magic as your primary source, probably), but then you'd have to make all of the footage black and white and you'd also have to try to mix just the dialogue out of the 5.1 mix on the DVD to get rid of the sound effects and music.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Completely different. DM is more of a documentary. DM isn't all B&W. The virtual lost cut could be all B&W and silent missing most if not all space sequences. You could be creative an borrow scenes from other movies to create "lost" footage. For example lift some desert scenes from another film. Or as someone else mentioned dogfight footage from early B&W films to be the "space" battles. Doesn't the Lost Cut utilize dog fight footage from old movies? I thought I remember reading that. Also those creative people could create some effects of their own to incorporate. Who knows.

the only problem is trying to actually verify what WWII films and docs were used and what scenes. I believe in some star wars documentaries there are split screen clips.

I believe some of the films are:

The dam busters

Tora! Tora! Tora!

The bridges at toko ri ( not sure if I spelled this right).

some of the stuff is documentary footage of japanese zero fighters vs allied forces.

even earlier cuts of the films had preliminary storyboards thet would cut to, by joe johnston etc.

plus the temp track music was on there, and by the way the lost cut was originally in color, but only exists now in black in white. But the color dailies exist, the proof is certainly there.
watch the trilogy documentary on the official dvd and you will see what I mean.

if someone at lucasfilm actually cared they could carefully reconsruct the edit from the archived dailies, or at least offer them as supplements on dvd and leave the rest to us fan editor's.

But just like the oot trilogy lucas consider's this a rough cut, and wanted it buried and never publicly released.

Just like they will not publish the screenplay drafts, or story treatments. even with the petitioning of such sites like starkiller ( the jedi bendu script site).

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

LFL is soooo totally uncool that way. It would be great to have George release all that stuff some day. But right now I feel like Dan Brown trying to break in to the Vatican vaults.

I think we are at the point where this thread ought to be combined with the other one on "the best edit that re-incorperates lost footage".

This would be an edit that I would watch all the time. No joke. Convert the whole thing to a rough cut look, make it in black and white, add projector noise instead of the sound, the works.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Just an all out fun take on what it might look like. Knowing it probably isn't even close. But who cares. We could try to match all of the footage to the original cantina B&W footage.
