Microsoft trainnings are dull as hell, but having a certification is always nice. I was planning on doing a .Net + SQLServer 2005 one day...

What really sucks is, all this training is for naught, because of the upcmoing Release of Windows Vista.

Not really. The cert is good for quite a while, and with MS you can take 1 upgrade test when you decide to upgrade. The 2000 certs are still good and will continue to be until EOL on the product, which is 2010, I believe. CompTIA's stuff never expires, which is cool.

Not entirely a problem, though. I was reading that there is a module of some sort in it that is necessary for its operation but nearly half of existing Wintel machines cannot run it. So I think that the adoption of Vista will be much slower than they may initially expect. People won't want to buy a new computer right away especially if their's already works fine.

Vista may be the straw... one can hope.

Hmmmm. Well, I'll see what happens. I thought 2000 Pro was the best commercial OS out there. XP is finally coming into maturity. It will be a while before I get into Vista.

Why would I install Vista if I can have win2003 server? Which is pretty crappy but still, the best windows around.

Windows has come a long way since 3.1

I'll put a Win2003 enterprise class server against a Linux server any day of the week...

I didn't mean to imply that there was something special about Windows Vista, simply that it will eventually supercede XP as the dominant Operatign Syststem, so learning XP at this point is a bit late in the game.

Well, I think XP has never really taken off to begin with. It's been unable to get out from the shadow of 2K Pro. In fact, I've resisted calls from my employer to switch our LAN to XP. I think it will function as a bridge to Vista, kind of like Win for Workgroups bridging to Win95.

I should clarify...yes, the home market has moved to XP, but not by choice. That's what their machines came with and 95% of users aren't going to try to change it because they lack the technical skills. Every pc we've gotten in from a vendor we specify "No OS" so we can put 2000 Pro on it. I know for a fact the defense contractor I used to work for was only beginning to deploy 2000 when I left in '03, and still has a vast install base of NT 4!! It just seems that anyone I know with any skill opts to use 2k instead of XP.

I wouldn't - LOL

But it's hard to have a Linux out-of-box as stable and ready to work as a windows server. Also, it demands less trainning and cheaper workforce to deploy it.

As with all things, the Linux v Windows debate has many points.

Linux is capable of being very small and thin, whereas Windows is not.

Windows is much more user-friendly (Linux/*IX has always been the domain of "mad scientists")

OpenSource has it's own pros and cons. In terms of support and fixes, etc I think it's easier to get them from THE source, not multiple sources, and Windows is definitely easier to keep updated for the average user.

Stability: IMO it's a wash these days. I worked in a data center with hundreds of WinTel servers and Solaris boxes along with DEC OpenVMS and Alpha servers. They all had their share of problems and I would say that of them all, the most troublesome was probably VMS servers.

Speed: Probably goes to Linux due to reduced size.

Security: I don't think Linux/*IX is any more safe than Windows, however due to the market share issue, Windows gets all the bad PR.

While Linux is somewhat dangling on a rope (the kernell is now kept by a 19 year old brazillian kid), it is much more stable and trustworthy than any windows platform IF you know what you are doing. Unfortunally most of us don't, so I say, get Win2003 and a 10 year old, and you got yourself a good database server, or web server, or network gateway, or whatever.

Regarding speed, you would be amazed by what a computer with Linux can do... That's when you realize how FAST a 2ghz processor really is.

Solaris, to me, is for educational porpouses only, sort of like an educative toy. It's great but very unstable. I wouldn't have a critical process running on a Solaris. But if you want to learn Java, it's great to sit in front of those cute SUN terminals and code on those... You won't need to install a virtual machine anyway!

That's another issue. Re: Open Source. The "movement" has it's share of greed as well considering Sun's been sitting on Java for 12 years now.

I'm currently dual-booting WinXP Home and Red Hat 8. I've got a mammoth book on how to use RH that came highly recommended. It's just a matter of time to sit down and learn it.
