well yes i agree 10 a day is bad, but if you look at most poeple that are posting now, very few are over that quota of ten a day, only the people that post ALOT i.e. adam, and co are over that. i donno though maybe 10 an hour would be good, its nto nessarly breaking freedom jay all its doing is forcing people to post more wisely, you'll quickly get rid of one liners and posts like that. and like i said its only the mr post alots that post that much. its your forum so its your choice, i dont see it as a fasist or comunist veiw point, and it would be a pioneeting idea. its not liek forums are chat lines where people need to post more then 10 posts a hour or something. and it doesnt even have to be 10 posts, you can set the limit to waht you see fit.

I agree with Shimraa. 10 posts per member per hour would be a good compromise between giving forum members freedom, and limiting spam.

INTERESTING THAT YOU SHOULD SAY THAT.

yes very interesting, considering it was the adam type poster that i think makes it nessary to put that in place.

I can certainly see the logic in limiting posts per hour, etc. I'm just not sure I like it. I mean, what if a poster had more than ten legitimate posts to make in an hour's time? I really don't think it should be limited like that. I enjoy the freedom. There are just some prices you have to pay for it. Do you think it's worth it? I do.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

how many times can ytou seriously say that you have made more then 10 valuable quality long posts in an hour. i am pretty sure i have never done it.

Well, first of all, I don't see why quality posts necessarily have to be long. But then again, we're getting into the arbitrary area of what would be considered a quality post. But while I've never quite taken stock myself in how many posts I can post in an hour, I think it is very much possible. You could have something to say in several different threads in once, or you could get locked in a debate on one topic with several other members of the forum. I wouldn't think it was fair if I was in mid-debate with someone over a point, and I'm just dying to respond to something I've disagreed with only to have the forum tell me I'm not allowed to post it for another 35 minutes. Of course, by that time you're out of the loop.

well maybe but i have been here a long time and i can honestly say that without the limit i have never gone over 10 posts in any hour unless i started to chat with someone. and like i said above you can use the OT IRC for that, again 10 posts might be a little harsh as well but something along those lines is what i am suggesting, it doesnt have to be 10 posts/ hour just something to deter people from being able to bager on about nothing, ill admit i do it all the time too, but it doesnt mean its right.

i donno why you cnt edit here, but anyway

here might be a better idea, to use this as a punishment for those that are bad. the mods could control it and there could be different levels i.e. 20post/hr - 10 posts/hr - 5 post/hr - ban.

There will never be a time-based post limit turned on by default. Never. I won't diminish activity here by limiting posts and artificially driving people to IRC to have conversations. IRC doesn't have a threaded structure and it's not persistent. If you're not in the room, you miss the discussion entirely. Completely different dynamic from an online forum.

Post limiting for problematic members is a good idea and is something I might experiment with.

Will the new forums have a branching thread structure allowing sub 'folders' with a topic area?

IE:

Off Topic (folder)--- Comic Books (folder)--- Star Wars Comics (folder)--- threads
--- Marvel Comics (folder)--- threads
--- Movie Tie-In Comics (folder)--- threads

etc...

(does that make sense? See http://www.superherohype.com/forums/ for example)

The new software does support categories that contain forums:

Category 1
- Forum 1
- Forum 2

Category 2
- Forum 3
- Forum 4

If you look at the forum you gave as an example (vBulletin), you'll see it's the exact same structure. They just link to the categories with the forums on a separate page instead of breaking them out on the index page because they have so many.

Anything that promotes quality above quantity has to be good. However, I agree with Jay that post limiting should not be automatic on sign-up, but only used as a punishment. This would make a fair and visible progression towards a ban. Titles were always a nice touch and a free-for-all would just be having two nicknames rather than one. I like the idea of the 6 month (or a year) Padawan title, followed by titles assigned by the mods (and anyone else who had reached the Jedi Council). Number of posts should not be a factor at all IMHO, though they should be recorded for those who want to know.

Jay, could you make image tags not work inside of quote boxes?

if an image is in a quote box, it should be a link to it instead.

*bow's down* brilliant skyman, brilliant.

i have to say, when people quote images its a bit of a pet peeve of mine. its one thing if you quote something from a page or so back, but when i have to scroll through the same image 3 times on the same page its annoying. It generally seems to happen when there are a bunch of images in a post too.

Jay, if you want/need any help implementing this (or anything) send me a pm/email. I'd be glad to lend my 'expertise'. I actually dont think this would be all that hard to implement either.

Thanks. Not a problem though. Just another regular expression to write--like all the other forum tags.

Nanner,

not your signature, a quote. Like when you quote what someone else has said in reply to the thread.

p.s. Jay, you seem to be doing it basically how I would have handled it.
