Blame culture. Blame conditioning. Blame society. Go join a hippy camp and lament the work-a-day world where "the man" is crushed by the oppressive government and cultural boundaries. Then go tell the Muslims that they shouldn't get so worked up about people drawing their Prophet (which, in itself, is against their religion) in unflattering ways (which is just plain sacrelige) because the cartoonists are just being individuals, and expressing themselves as such. And don't blame me when they light you on fire and fill you full of holes (not necessarily in that order). When you do things differently, or have quirks, you're an individual. When you do things that are offensive to society, you're a jackass and a creep (to that society). If you publish cartoons about the Prophet, you're not necessarily a jackass or a creep, but the Muslims sure think you are. If you talk openly about stuff that other people find to be distinctly no-go topics, then they think you are a jackass and a creep.
These are societal labels. One cannot be a jackass and/or creep, except in the eyes of others. You can take that as a small victory if you want, or you can realize that it's what others think of you that makes you what you are in this society.
Be smug. You are comfortable with your body, and maybe they aren't. Or maybe they just have the common sense and decency not to make it a matter of public record.
(Note: The author in no way supports the actions of radical Muslim groups, and is actually really disgusted by the whole affair.)
