It's probably a good thing it didn't pan out anyway, Dayv. Since the site is a registered business now, anything done in a volunteer capacity might be a difficult situation to handle from a tax perspective.

I'll probably make use of cafepress.com initially and see how it pans out from a profit perspective.

I doubt this will get a lot of support, but I'd like to voice my opinion anyway. I've noticed that spamming isn't really the problem it was a few months ago. With that said, maybe continuing to keep the post count and rankings wouldn't be as much of a problem as it was previously thought.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Sorry about my last post - I'm not trying to incite anything, and the edit function doesn't work in this thread for some reason. But Gaffer's right, the spamming isn't such a problem anymore (although it could be again if some new user came along and decided he wanted to reach Jedi Knight status in a week or whatever). I personally don't mind either way if we keep or lose the post count.

Jay, is there any way you could add the ability to add a poll to an existing thread in the new forum software? I was forced to create a thread this week solely for a pole having to do with an already existing thread. There have been other times where I have desired to add poll to a thread that I had previously created. Any possibility?

I haven't included poll functionality in this first draft, so the ability to add a poll to an existing thread is certainly something I can keep in mind when I do get to that point.

Here's sort of an odd forum software question for you Jay-

On a few forums I participate in there are icons to the left of the thread names that show you, when logged in of course, whether or not YOU the poster have commented in that thread or not. I find that useful as many times threads will have similar names and its a nice 'at a glance' way to see if you have left a psot there without going to your own profile and looking at your post history. Does the new software have anything like that?

Thanks! GC

This should make it into the first beta. I haven't implemented it yet, but it's on my list.

Jay, on the new site, will there be limits on the size of sig images? Or even the size of images in general.

I'm not a fan of huge sig banners, nor of large page-breaking images.

There won't be a limit imposed on images within posts and signatures. You'll have options within the control panel for handling images, however. You can elect to replace any images in posts or signatures with a link to the image; clicking the link will open the image in a new browser window. There are separate controls for post content and signature content, so you can enable this option for only one or both.

This functionality is finished and will be in the beta.

Perhaps I'll investigate functionality that scans images and loads or blocks them based on certain parameters. Maybe with JavaScript. However, I have to think that such functionality would require downloading the entire image to your browser's cache first or having the server download it and scan it there. Lots of network overhead.

Another option might be to selectively hide images. I could place a link or button on the top left corner of images that would allow users to hide them if they're ridiculously large. You'd still be downloading and viewing them, but if they're too large for your display resolution or they're breaking the page's layout (which shouldn't happen if I've built the templates properly), you could click the button and make the image go away, fixing the page.

That's actually pretty damn clever. I'm patting myself on the back right now.

Jay, please, please hurry on the Ignore function. There are 3 people I really need to be able to ignore. Please hurry.

Have you considered actually ignoring them? Works wonders.

Well, I am do just that with one poster, but not having to look at what they post would be even better and easier.

Well, it's not really especially relevent with the new software coming up, but it's something that's amused/bugged me since I came here. I often check to see which members are on the boards, and the search function has a button for each letter of the alphabet, then "All", and then "Other." My question is, what could "Other" possibly refer to? I never get any results back when I click it, and I can't think of what members could possibly fit under that category, unless some user names start with a number. Hmm, I guess that could be it. Well, I guess explaining it has caused me to reach my own conclusion, unless it could mean something else. Anyway, I was just wondering if it could be a glitch or oversight or something.

I have no idea. I bought this software because it was ColdFusion-based and I know ColdFusion. To be honest, it's really not put together all that well. It's really showing its age too.

The new software is such a massive improvement I think you'll all be very pleased.

I don't want to knock Jay's efforts, but I tend to agree with Dayv. I'm a minimalist kinda guy.

You guys will have to bend like reeds in the wind, I'm afraid. You can't have new functionality and not the navigation to go with it. The site is growing. Just the way things are.

Besides, what exactly is "going on" in the mockup that isn't "going on" in the current software? The left nav? That's all I can see. If anything, the interface is cleaner because the icons and links have been replaced by tidy dropdown menus.

That mockup is also way out of date, btw.

While greencapt's post was amusing, Jay has a point. Are going to take the same position with the forum as we do with the Star Wars films? Change needs to be embraced, unless it sucks eggs, which I'll teach your grandmother to do.
