That's what the world is coming to. You can't have freedom of speech because people are so concerned with political correctness and things being offensive. I think Bush is having a bit too much impact on the world.

I pity those Muslims killing people over a frikkin cartoon.

Why do you pity them? I don't get it. What is there to pity? Seriously. In Islam, the Prophet is held in higher regard than one's parents, than one's children. And it's wrong to depict the Prophet in any demeaning or degrading way. Back in the Middle Ages, one would be beheaded for insulting the Prophet Mohammed. For them, there is a punishment worse than death for such an insult. As an analogy, how do you think many Christians would feel if a comic of Jesus Christ performing sodomy was republished in the name of free speech? Do you think they'd just shrug it off? No, probably not.

Now, I'm not condoning the actions of the extremists, but I think you should at least try to understand the sentiment, the insult, the outrage they must feel over these cartoons.

I understand the outrage, I also "understand" why Timothy McVeigh did what he did. That doesn't make either school of thought any less senseless.

American popular culture is constantly parodying Christianity, Jesus, etc. Seen South Park lately.... ever? Do you think "Soldiers of Christ" are gunning to take Matt Stone or Trey Parker down, or the American culture for nurturing them?

Any group of people that stage mass protests calling for violent retribution over a cartoon - a fucking cartoon - are idiots. It's as simple as that. I understand why fundamentalist Muslims over in their sandy anuses of countries, with their backwards "Muhammed first" logic are offended by such a cartoon - and I also understand why their extreme collective reaction was idiotic, and why those who share their sentiment are idiots.

It looks like cultrual relatavism is in, common sense is out.

Yes, Warbler, you really shouldn't. I like that you brought up the ignoring bullies comment. I was often victimized by bullies as a child myself, and ignoring them certainly didn't make them go away. You're absolutely right. And it's pretty nearly impossible to make all trolls or bullies go away. This or any board or any microcosm is just like a playground at school, and you can't choose who plays on that playground with you, so you just have to let the insults and immature behavior not affect you, and just try your best to have fun with it. If they get under your skin, they win, and then they continue with increasing frequency.

I've reread this post, and I'm afraid it might sound like I'm being condescending, but I'm really not, so please don't take it that way. I'm just trying to relate it to something near and dear to my heart.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I'm 75% with Warbler in that I agree with what he's saying but don't think we need to go all totalitarian. I personally HATE it when a good conversation is killed dead by some idiot butting in with nothing better to say than 'I concur' or a smiley face.

I've been waiting for someone to post that Mohammed Cartoon. I agree with Both Sybe and Stinky - I understand the anger but the response is an over-raction or worse - an excuse for violence.

how bout we have certain areas, where everyone would be allowed to read, but only selected members would be able to post? Also I hate to say it, but I think this forum needs an age limit. I'd have it so only those who are 16 or older would be able to join. The would help cut down the childish posts that are increasing.

And how do we achieve that? How can we impose an age limit? By asking if he's older than 16?

I hate it when people tell me that. That is what my parents and teachers told me to do with my bullies at school. Newflash, it didn't work.

One thing is trying to ignore a bully who is capable of phisically harassing you. Another thing is ignoring text on a monitor.

I say it has to stop. I say Jay has a choice to make. He can have a forum full of mature intelligent posters with few limits on what can be posteds, or a forum of trolls with no limit on what can be posted. He can't have it both ways.

Warbler, I totally understand your point of view and I agree with you. I hate these trolls as much as you do, as much as all the older, serious users do, but I don't think it's fair to blame Jay for omission. He is doing what he can do under the situation and under what he has specified for this forum. Maybe with the new software he might come up with something that might make this matter a bit better...
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Because anyone taking such actions as killing people and destroying property over someone's opinion do not understand the concept of tolerance. You have a point. No matter the religion, I find it pathetic that people would react so violently and irrationally over someone's opinion. If that person who wrote the comic wants to put down a religious leader, I say, more power to them!

Why should they be the ones who have to learn tolerance? Shouldn't we also be tolerant of others' beliefs? Tolerance doesn't really work unless everyone is tolerant, and these cartoons don't go very far towards showing tolerance and respect for Islam. Besides, free speech isn't really free and never has been. Those cartoons, in another light, could be viewed as hate speech, and in cases where our free speech causes harm to another's culture, I feel it should be limited.

What it boils down to is a lack of respect. Tolerance is the lowest level of respect. What the European papers have done by publishing the comics is show a total lack of respect for the Muslim community and couched it in the terms of "freedom of the press." However, the Muslim community has done nothing to mitigate the damage by violently protesting the publication of the comics. In fact, what they've done is arouse curiosity and made the issue mushroom into something even more offensive: the "car-crash effect", as I like to call it. If the Muslim community had either issued a strongly worded rebuke or done nothing, the whole issue would have gone away; instead, it winds up making headlines all over the world, and now EVERYONE has to see the comics to see what all the fuss is about.

There are only two ways to deal with the disrespectful: one is to rebuke them, and the other is to ignore them. Anything else is going to fuel their flames.

Absolutely.

And I hate the timing of all this. You'd think that these cartoons were just published last week or something. But no. From the BBC:

30 Sept: Danish paper publishes cartoons
20 Oct: Muslim ambassadors complain to Danish PM
10 Jan: Norwegian publication reprints cartoons
26 Jan: Saudi Arabia recalls its ambassador
30 Jan: Gunmen raid EU's Gaza office demanding apology
31 Jan: Danish paper apologises
1 Feb: Papers in France, Germany, Italy and Spain reprint cartoons

Anyone want to wager a guess as to WHY this is happening NOW instead of, oh say... a few months ago?
