I hate (but secretly snicker through) university politics.

The University of Saskatchewan Students Union (USSU) wanted to switch theoir support from one national lobby group (CASA) to another (CFS), but CFS requires that they hold a referendum on the issue. The USSU would have done it last year, but didn't feel there was enough time to prepare for the referendum, so they held it in October. The students voted by a slim margin (52%) to leave CASA and join the CFS. There was much bitching and official complaining during the referendum, though, because of a lack of preparation, some illegal lobbying, and the fact that two members of CFS's Referendum Officiating Council were also heading up the 'Yes' campaign. Given all this, this week the USSU's Elections Board has recommended that the USSU negate the results of the referendum due to poor handling.

Now, the USSU wants to join CFS, but if they overturn the Election Board's recommendations, there could be legal action. On the other side, since the CFS does not recognize the USSU Elections Board, they see the referendum as binding and have already ratified the USSU as members, meaning that they can start collecting fees from the USSU, and if they hold out, there could be legal action. I laugh because I voted 'No', and had money on this very outcome.
