I was lookin for a copy of the Phantom Edit and found this place thru Google. This place rejuvanated my love for Star Wars something I thought would be impossible.

I hear you! I was a big Star Wars fan before I found this site, but I figured that once ROTS came out, that would be the end. I didn't like the OT changes, but I bought it anyway, and just watched the VHS tapes I have. Now I've found new life in Star Wars, and am secretly re-converting all over again
I was looking for copies of the O-OT, and was hoping I wouldn't have to pay an arm and a leg on ebay, so I put star wars original trilogy into google, and voila. I still don't often have much to say, but I lurk regularly.
Originally posted by: olzen I've been lurking for a while (I can't remember how I actually found the site in the first place - my best guess is a bit of Googling), but I didn't actually register till recently. I did sign the petition at my first visit or so, though.
Way back in the day I followed a link from digitalbits.com so I could sign the petition which wasn't even up yet. I continued to pop in a few times a month but didn't post until someone had a question about the bounty hunter than Han ran into on Ord Mandel. I signed up that day and answered the question. The rest is histoy.
Widescreen Advocacy Page. It had an animated image link of Han & Greedo with the caption "You know how this scene should end." By the way, why has the signature count been frozen at 72,000? And why won't Bill Hunt include a link from the bits when they sponsored a petition just to get the prequel movies on dvd before '06? Does he have to kiss up to Lucasfilm?

I was a very early signature on the petition, then I forgot about the site until the official DVD's came out, which I bought on opening day due to all the positive press they'd gotten. I was so angry at the actual product that I went onto Google looking for preservations of the O-OT and to find The Phantom Edit, and it led me back here.
Now I just twiddle my thumbs awaiting the X0 project.

I moved a good portion of the signatures off-site because the database was packed. In doing so, the signature count was made inaccurate because it resets itself whenever a new signature is added. It was easier at the time to replace the realtime count with "72,000+" than to rebuild the counting engine (simple really, but not when you have no free time). I'm considering different solutions to the problem.
I didn't hear anything from Bill Hunt after the initial publicity push.
I went back into my old e-mails and read all the back-and-forthing I did with Bill. It's not really as bad as I remember it, but his lack of support over the long-term is what really pissed me off. My impression was that he disappeared once the petition's popularity waned. One other site kept pushing me to let them host it so they could attach their name to it--for the good of the petition, of course. Because it's impossible to publicize something unless it resides on your server under your domain name.
Will you guys do me a favor and let me know if I turn into a capitalist asshole? I want to make money from the site, but not at the expense of my soul.
I FOUND THE PETITION FROM A LINK ON TF.N. AT THE TIME I WAS WORKING AS THE MULTIMEDIA PROVIDER FOR CORUSCANTONLINE.COM. I WAS OVER AT TF.N, BECAUSE CO.COM WENT UNDER. I KEPT CHECKING THE PETITION LINK UNTIL FINALLY IT WENT ONLINE. SO, I SIGNED IT. I'VE STATED THIS BEFORE, AND I'LL DO IT AGAIN. I'M PROUD THAT I WAS THE FIRST SIGNATURE AFTER JAY ON THE PETITION. THE REST IS HISTORY.
I originally found this site after reading about it on another Star Wars board. I was incensed that Lucas had decided to ruin my favorite movies with unnecessary CGI updates and footage best left on the cutting room floor, and would not be offering a choice on future releases. I then decided to offer people an alternative to buying questionable, overpriced sets from feebay and the rest is history. I know some members here hate me for doing this, but I don't feel I've committed some heinous act that certain members make it out to be. On another note, Bill Hunt seems like one of those people who initially was regarded as someone to look to for honest DVD news, but has slowly turned into being a greedy shill for the studios. You won't find any negative comments on any reviewed release on his site, no matter how badly the movie/transfer/version sucks. I guess you can't bite the hand that feeds you. Jay, have you found this to be the case? I do visit his site from time to time, but mostly just to find out about upcoming releases and their technical specifications.
I stopped visiting his site long ago. Half the news is worthless speculation and rumors, and the other half is stuff I could learn from reading elsewhere.
Sad how the heroes of yesterday become the shills of today.

I totally agree with everything that Jay has said about Bill Hunt and his support for the petition.
I dont know the man personally nor have i ever spoken with him, but as ive pointed out here on the forums many times, he talked the talked on his site about how these movies must be preserved and blah blah blah... when it came down to it he backed out and never looked back. And what does he say now about the new movies that were released?
That its nice to finally have the SW movies on DVD. Ha! I guess all that talk about preserving the originals meant nothing to him. He even goes as far to say in his archieves of his site that a petition would never have helped the cause... I'd hate to ever be in a war and have him captured by the enemy, without a spine like that he would fold within minutes. If there's one thing i've learned growing up it's stick to your guns. Never give in, and never let people walk all over you.
But now im ranting.
As for The Digital Bits. It was once my favorite site to go to until i realized that they a) rely on rumors wayyyy too much b) when they do report news, its usually a week or two old and then c) they're cover art section is rarely updated and highly incorrect on most occasions.
I've said before and I'll say it again http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.php and http://www.dvdfile.com/
