That being said, are you looking for NTSC or PAL. There's also a HiDef version out by Citizen. Depends on your needs and what you like.

Hello all, I'm a newbie so please be kind.

I'm unsure if what I'm about to say has been addressed here but has anyone given sconsideration to the Dune soundtrack. It's not common knoweldge that there are two versions of the soundtrack: the original soundtrack and the extended edition that as sold bu Spercollector a few years ago. The original has 17 tracks - 16 by Toto, and track by Brian Eno called "Prophecy Theme." The extended version has 30 tracks and is only Toto compositions - no Prophecy Theme here. I thought this information may prove helpful to those attempting a edit.

On the subject of the DUNE extended soundtrack by TOTO...

It's too bad that a number of the tracks have such bad sound problems on them. At one point I was going to try and repair these damaged tracks so that a more complete version of the soundtrack could be included on the FanFiltration edit of DUNE DVD set as an extra. Thing is, that I just ran out of time on the project.

Here is an informative link to a review of the two known DUNE Soundtrack CDs by TOTO. There is also info about the sound problems found on the extended version CD put out by PEG.

FanFiltration,

You'll note that there were two release of the soundtrack. The 2001 edition has the sound issues corrected. I think I have the corrected edition.

My PM is now on. Sorry, I had thought they were on before, especially since I sent a few.

How can I find out more information about Citizen's version?

The copy I have of the extended soundtrack sounds fine, but if someone wants to listen to it they can judge for themselves. Also the version I have does not have the sound effects or voice overs running over it. It also has tracks from the early version of the soundtrack (including the eno track and others from that cd which I added myself).

I'm curious as to what FanFiltration is doing abuot mixing scenes from the Smithee version with that of the Lynch version in regards to music. The Smithee version has a pervasive soundtrack that won't (IMO) mix well with the Lynch version. For instance, there are scenes in the Lynch version that have no music, while the Smithee version has a constant soundtrack running through the entire scene. Are you going to ujust use the entire Smithee version in such cases? If only there was a way to remove the music from the Smithee version... it's bloody awful.
I want to see your re-edit! Whatever it is!

I agree, in looking over the film for editing I think that as much as possible of the lynch version should be used. There's too much wallpapering of music on the smithee version.

My hope is there is little to no music in the Center channel on the EE DVD version. This way we can strip it to the center channel only and do what we want with the music and sound. As long as the sound mix is "normal" that can be done and we can create a seemless transition from theatrical to extended shots.

What extraction software can decode multiple channelsand keep them seperate? I'm using Cinematize, which will unfortuanely downmix everything to 2 channels.

When making my (Pan and Scan) edit of DUNE, I had to do a great amount of sound editing and mixing. I spent as much time working in Cool Edit (Audio editing program) as I did video editing in Adobe Premiere. One trick I used was to make small background sounds and drop them in under edits. For Leto's office scene, we used a cue from the soundtrack CD mixed with some new sound effects that we made using a microphone. My edit is riddled with small audio changes. Some video was extended to fit the soundtrack playing, or soundtrack was changed to fit the video. The re-edit of "THE BOX" scene was very involved, and took a few days to make it passable. Still, I believe my version of this scene flows and makes much more sense than any other version. The arrival at DUNE, where the local people take a look at Leto and family was also a tricky sound edit.

Curious if you're going to integrate any of the deleted scenes. I can see why a lot of them were deleted. The last two might fit well and perhaps Rabban's and Mapes' little bit but the rest? Left me kind of cold.

I like the idea of your project but Fanfiltrations version is what I think every fan was looking for... something similar to the original intended cut of Lynch. He used the TV cut stuff well and improved the sound in areas.
But hey!! I will belooking forward to your version also..

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.

i have that one too, except for someone speaking at the end of a track there is no problems with sound on the 2001 cd, the only problem is that you can't tell what version it is if you can't look the disc itself! (there's is a little "01!" on the lecture side of the disc) besides of that, this one of my all time favorite soundtracks!

Any chance of someone producing a xvid/divx version of Fanfiltration's edit?
I've been having a tough time keeping my BT balances and I'd like to see how this edit is before committing to a 9 gig u/l-d/l.

The scene between Duke Leto and Thufir Hawat not long after their Arrakeen arrival (the "Mahdi" scene, a theme touched upon more substantially in the Sci-Fi Channel mini-series) would be another of the new DVD's deleted scenes worthy of inclusion into the new cut, adding greater layering and depth to Paul's eventual role as the Fremen messiah.

To say nothing of giving Duncan Idaho's presence in the film slightly more heft and importance, and being a nice quiet character moment betwixt the two comrades (much being spoken in the eyes alone, as opposed to aloud). The scene itself possessed no overlaid music cues at all, and would only require some "polishing" to bring the picture transfer up to spec with the rest of the film.

I agree that the acting in most of the deleted scenes are not great. I feel that even though the extended opening acting is not great, we really need more expisition to help us roll along (just as the lord of the rings opening help set the tone). other then that I don't think most of those deleted scenes fit. I think the death of Jamus is a great moment to complete the scene from the extened version of the film. I don't feel that the Shadout Shouts bit works or fits if it were added in. The only other scene I would say that should probably be added is the death of thufar.

Rather, that brief moment towards the end of Jamis's funeral -- where Paul "gives water to the dead" -- is right out of Herbert's novel, and should be retained in the new edit, if at all possible. Re-telecining the footage up to DVD standard would probably have to occur, but it's likely workable.

Send me email to FanFiltration@hotmail.com. Let's see what we can do. I'd also like to see this title in xvid/divx. That is, if it does not look that bad.

You won't regret it. The Fanfiltration Edit is quickly becoming my most favorite fan edit of all times!

FF, pardon if you answered this already, but now that you've done so much work, are you going to re-do it in anamorphic using the new disc as a base?

No, he isn't. But I am involved in a new project that will use the High Definition transfer as the basis for a new edit, with extra footage coming from the new DVD release. It will be major major work and won't be finished this year.

Thanks for asking ADM.

There most likely will be an updated letterboxed version of The FanFiltration Edit of DUNE, but I can't work on it at this time. There is just no time for me to do it justice. I've got a number of other projects that must be finished before I can think of re-making FanFiltration's DUNE. Also, I'm selling my home and moving to Hawaii in this spring...

I'm very excited that other fans are motivated to construct there own DUNE edits, and I look forward to viewing them all when available.

The next FanFiltration release is due in just a few days (Keep an eye on MYSPLEEN), and it is called "Star Wars Making Magic: The DVD".
I hope that my "Chronological Godfather" edit will be the release after that.

Is there still interest in a Xvid version of the FanFiltration edit or was it just me?
If I finally finish with my Matrix project I wouldn't mind putting it together and seeding it somewhere.
