I hate to sound troll-ish, but......

I don't like rap.

I REALLY don't like rap.

It has as much ear-pleasing value for me as a cat being run over with a semi.......repeatedly.

I dare anyone on this site to post the best, most intelligent rap lyrics that they can find. I double dare them, actually.

Hit me with your best shot.

Here is a few excerpts from "You Never Know", by Immortal Technique, a song recommended by a respected member of the forum:

Fuck the horse and carriage shit, her love was never for hire
Disciplined, intellectual beauty's what I desire
Flyer than Salma Hayek or Jennifer Lopez

On the block, bitches was jealous, but wouldn't admit it
Talk shit, and deny to everyone that they did it
'Cause they regreted the long list of niggaz that they let hit it

My real niggaz would catch me thinkin', out of my zone
Fuckin' lots of different women, but I still felt alone

Um.......I'll pass.

listen to the song man, and if you had an idea of what urban culture was like you'd see where he is coming from.

Fuck the horse and carriage shit, her love was never for hire

do you know what that line is saying, first off he is saying shes wasnt a slut or a hooker that has sex for drugs or money, on top of that he is alluding to rich lord from the early 20th century and before that used to pick up hookers and invite them into there carrage. it was a ploy thought to have been used by jack the ripper. in that one line he talks about so much, and he binds history and urban culture together.

But just how many people are gonna pick up on that? Considering most of the people I know that listen to rap, not very many.

Just feel glad you're one of the smart ones.

Shim brought up an interesting point. I wonder if the majority of those who listen to rap actually pay attention to its implications, and ponder the actual meaning of the words.

Here's an example of most of the rap-people I know:

Blastin' da hottest new jam outta their Escalade, shouting at the top of their lungs "Dis new beat is trippin', yo! Yee-ah, bo-ee!"

That's why I abandoned that particular musical genre years ago.

you know when i talk about intellegent lyrics nanner i am refering to stuff like this. alot of old school songs, tupac and biggie, and some new stuff i.e. eminems stuff have all that stuff in them. what your refering too is crunk, and no i dont like it either. if you dl those songs i told you about and actually listen to them you might actually feel smarter cause they are so rich.

Nanner, from what I hear in other posts, you and I have similar tastes in a lot of music. But I'd urge you not to turn away from hip-hop categorically. I don't like using the term "rap" because most people like to put a "c" in front. If you want smart lyrics, try this on for size.

From "The Love Song" by K-Os

Lyrical optometrists with 20/20 vision
Are serving rounds like my granny used to serve provisions
Chaotical amneotical fluid
The rap druid is fluent in the art of onomatopoeia
Metaphysical microscopic topic dropper
When I was a kid I wanted rollerskates and a bike chopper
But alas, pop, pop never thought to keep me in style
Thats why I'm schizophrenic now
So God bless the child that has his own
The harvest we reap is what we sow
Chrome microphone - shoot it
Towards a dome of computer digital clones that mimic philosopher stones
Sayin a style's their own when they bite like Mike Furounsville
The sounds ill
Relationship is a mirror
That you see yourself up in and the picture is clearer
Thats why I'm on the scene with a mike like Ernesto Guevara
Why I may exploit with lights like Geraldo Rivera, they just.

see i like k-os, he just doesnt have that prefect flow in his lyrics, they are quite chop if you know what i mean. here is a great verse

Yeah.... Harlem streets stay flooded in white powder
Like those mother fuckers runnin' away from the twin towers
Gun shots rock the earth like a meteor shower
Bowling For Columbine, fair, giving the media power
Innocence devoured like a chicken spot snack box
Government cocain cooked into ghetto crack rock
Corrupt cops false testimony at your arraignment
Check to check, constant struggle to make the payments
Working your whole life wondering where the day went
The subway stays pakced like a multi-cultural slave ship
It's rush hour, 2:30 to 8, non stoppin'
And people coming home after corporate share croppin
And fuck flossin, mothers are trying to feed children
But gentrification is kicking them out of their building
A generation of babies born without health care
Families homeless, thrown the fuck off of the welfare

See, the lyrics posted by sybeman were pretty good. The ones that Shim posted were just saturated with swear words, and therefore lost all semblance of intelligence.

you might actually feel smarter cause they are so rich.

Isn't that a bit much? Not even my favorite music makes me feel smarter. I guess the thing for me, is that I need music that requires some musical talent in order to do. I'm not saying that all rap/hip-hop artists are untalented, I just think that guitar chops or drum rhythms sort of win out over "mad rhymin' skillz".

I hear ya, Nan. That's a reason I dislike a lot of hip-hop. But, then again, there's a lot of popular music out there that I don't like. 90% of everything is crap.

One of the reasons I like K-Os, though, because he dislikes rap. Well, he dislikes "bling rap", as he calls it. The commercial stuff.

Palpatine as a rap artist:

Just sitting here in my chair, knowing that I'm the only heir. Anakin is dumb and full of cum. Mace Windu, Is that all You can Do? Darth Maul, what a Foul ....you lost to Obi, which almost rhymes with Kenobi.......HA Boy what I would give to go for some kyber crytsals which are the equivalent of what you modern day rap artists call powerful pistols. Yoda you had to go AWOL....and put up your WALL.... before I gave you my All. The more I sit here on my chair, the more I await in despair for that dumb new apprentice of mine had to knock up a dumb bitch, who had an itch to yield two annoying offspring who would grow to want to throw me from my chair in a fling. I may have to check them out.

I'm primarily a rocker, but I hate a lot of modern rock as well. Pretty much any new band on the radio (Nickelback, Linkin Park, Puddle of Mudd, etc.) makes me want to pull my hair out in clumps. I pretty much listen to older rock (except for White Zombie, but they don't count. They're more of a guilty pleasure than a "OMG THEYRE TEH BEST BAND EVRRR!!!!" type band. I know they aren't that good, but I like them anyway).

I'll have to check out K-O's. They (or he, whatever ) sound intriguing.

One reason I have a grudge against rap is the rap/rock remix, i.e. taking old, classic rock songs and rapping over them. So far I've heard remixes of Aerosmith's "Dream On" (by Eminem, no less, whom I hate), Slayer's "Raining Blood", and Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train". There's only so much I can take......

The only rap/rock remix that doesn't suck is Aerosmith/Run-DMC's "Walk This Way" remix.

I can't say I crazy about it. I've never gotten anything out of it. I do not mean to insult the rappers or the people that listen to them, but rap is just not for me.

comon nanner dont be like all the other ignorant rap haters and turn a blind eye just cause there is swear words in there. actually read the music.

well i donno depends how much you read into stuff, soem rap draws alot of connects that people dont regularly see. so in that way it does, by makin you more informed. of course it all depends on what rap you listen to though.

I'm not blasting it just because of the language. Bad language doesn't bother me. I think I've already posted my other reasons for disliking rap, but it also has to do with the fact that some musicians can get famous by working their asses off to be really good guitar players, while others can get famous by talking to a rhythm that somebody made on their computer.

You know, swearing doesn't make one cool. And not likeing swear words in rap, does not make one ignorant. One of the problems I have with rap is that I can barely make out what the rapper is saying half the time, and what I can make out is either swear words(mostly the f word) or doesn't make sense(to me).
