In a word, yes. Flash Gordon (1980) is a prime example of being campliy self-aware. The screenplay was by Lorenzo Semple Jr., who knows from camp; he was head writer on the Batman TV series of the late 1960s. They chose Sam J. Jones based on his looks, and surrounded him with very talented actors, most of whom were in on the joke. The production values on the film were extremely high, which leads me to believe that Dino DeLaurentiis may not have been in on the joke.

Do you think Sam J. Jones was in on the joke?
Speakin' of which, there was this rumor going around that Ashton Kutcher was up to star as Flash Gordon in a remake, and what creeped me out was that Kutcher actually does look like Sam J. Jones.
