Well it looks like I'll be getting a copy from Vandal and from DAYV, which is cool. I'll take a look at them both and see if they really are the *exact* same disc (since Vandal's mentioned something about some minor fan restoration work). If they are, I'll just immediately drop one of the two copies back in the mail to whoever wants it. If they're not, I'll ISO whichever the better copy is and start burning/mailing copies of that one to whoever wants it. Also, I'll attempt to get it up'd to MySpleen if they'll allow it (if anyone could help that cause, that would be appreciated). In any case, I've got a ginormous stack of blanks just itching to have something on them, so go ahead and PM me if you want to get this. Let's get this party started...errr... something.

You know, apart from the sublime but short animated segments, this movie really sucks.

True, it isn't the best of Disney's live action work (we all know Darby O'Gill & The Little People gets that title... right? :-) OK, maybe Love Bug) but it is an historic film and has, for the last 20 years since its last theatrical run, been shunned by Disney. And frankly I think that just the innovation for its time, and the skill (again, for its time) with which the animation and live action were blended together is quite spectacular. Plus the songs make me smile like a half-wit, so hey.

I have a DVD of it now, and it's pretty good, so I think I'll go ahead and just send out copies of that to whoever needs it rather than wait for Vandal to see if his is of a better quality. If his comes through and it IS noticeably better, I'll make it known. I'm ready to go on this now, so go ahead and PM if you want one (Sorry I wasn't able to get to you in time Rikter, but I'm glad to hear you got ahold of it regardless!!!)

Well it's official Disney Chief Nixes SOS. and I Qoute from Disney Fan Website Laughing Place.com

"Iger States Disney Does Not Have Plans to Release Song of the South
During the question and answer session, Iger was asked regarding the future of Song of the South. He stated he had recently screened the film. And was concerned by some of the depictions and how they would be received. He stated that they have made the decision not to release the film."

Well, that should kill the rumors then I guess. Amazon had a possible 60th anniversary edition listed. I'd also heard that they were going to restore it after The Jungle Book.

Well, that sucks. They released the WWII propaganda cartoons on DVD and the sky didn't fall in, but they fret over SOTS?

What I have is from a Pal VHS master tape to DVD using a Pal to NTSC convertor machine, which allowed the reds to be soften some. A buddy of mine used to work for a place that did vhs to DVD conversions and in 2000 or so, he started doing "Song of the South" on dvd for anyone who bought the PAL vhs tape. It was done on fairly inferior media, and is on one of those stand-alone dvd recorders that do chapter breaks every 15 minutes. I thought bout reauthoring it with a menu, but if I could get on the PIF chain, I'd appreciate it. Rikter might vouch that I'm good for it. ^_^

While I don't necessarily agree with Iger's decision, he was at least willing to screen the film and make a decision. Compare this to the Eisner years where the answer was a flat no to even re-considering the company line.

I know Leonard Maltin is a fan of the film and has lobbied for years to get it released on DVD. Not sure if he has made his case to the Iger regime yet.

I just wish Disney would give more attention to one of the most underrated movies of all time, The Rocketeer! The DVD release is so bare bones, it's on a single layer disc. The transfer is horrible. They *need* to restore and release this movie again.

If it weren't for the juggernaut of Terminator 2 back in 1991, I'm sure this movie would have been a massive success.
