Idea: for an edit of Batman Begins

 (Edited)

has anyone ever considered doing a fan edit of batman begins so it does’nt contradict the first batman movie by tim burton. Batman’s Parents are killed by some no named bum after leaving the theater, not by the joker, and i KNOW THAT IN THAT MOVIE IT IS’NT A THEATER.

It's possible but very hard to do considering how you'd have to insert a reason for gordon gaining fifty pounds, batman lossing 2ft in height (grr.. still love ya keaton), changing eye color, etc... the list just keeps piling up. It'd be a lot of work just to see what'd be like.

What id be interested in is a more year-one accurate version, if that's possible. Insert anything deleted (especially scarecrow stuff). Make the wayne's death more cinematic, you know, really drawn out for full dramatic effect instead of a quick *pop* *Pop* mom's dead, dad tells son one of the movie's themes, then dies unconvincingly- eh, needless to say, it didn't work for me. Give bruce's mom a character maybe, cut out Robin, the little cute kid that gave it a sort-of rip-off of hellboy feel... slice out scarecrow's shaming by joey. Little things like that I'd do if I could.

I am seriously considering a fan edit of this, incorporating the Wayne parents killing from the original 1989 Tim Burton film, and thereby eliminating any footage and plotline dealing with Joe Chill. I would do this version in chronological order, re-edited to better tie in with the other five Batman films ("Batman", "Batman Returns", "Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm", "Forever", and "Batman & Robin").

I don't think that Batman from Tim Burton and later on Schumacher has much in common with Christopher Nolan's Batman. I am pretty sure these guys would hate each other. I am thankful for having a new Batman (Bale). This time he is the dark knight that I read so much about in the comic books.
Although I of course like the idea of any fan edit, I don't think this one would be an improvement at all, but for fun... why not?

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

Does anybody have the video game for this? It's relevant to the Ep III re-edit I'm trying to pull together. Gonna fish in some other threads to see what I can find.

I'm glad someone finally brought up Batman Begins, which I think is ripe for edting.

I've always felt BB's weakest aspect was its score. It's practically non-existent, and that two-note Batman theme just doesn't cut it. Ever since it came out I've wanted to suggest an edit replacing the music with approptiate selections from Danny Elfman's Batman and Batman Returns soundtracks. Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow might also come in handy in filling out a new score. I know many people will say, "The music is perfect, the old stuff wouldn't fit!" Many of my friends have told me that very thing, and maybe they have a point. But imagine the end of BB after Batman says, "And you'll never have to," and jumps off the roof accompanied by "Batman Theme Reprise" from the B89 soundtrack. Goosebumps. Anyway, this is a dream project of mine that's on my to-do list when one day I have the time and resources to make fan edits myself. Of course if anyone would like to try their hand at it in the meantime they'd get no complaints from me.

A chronological edit of BB as mentioned above would be interesting, though I don't think the narrative flow would hold up, it might be worth a shot.

While watching the Anthology and Begins DVDs over the past week another idea occured to me similar to what's already been suggested, but I'll have to give it more thought for discussion at a later time.

But in the original comics the The Joker/Jack Napier didn't kill Wayne's parents. Batman Begins has more in common with the original story than the Burton movies ever did.

The Burton/Schumacher movies are not meant to tie in with the Nolan movie AT ALL. They are complete seperate entities.

The only thing I'd like changed in this movie is the death of the Waynes. That was too ... well ... whoops, they're dead ... y'know?

Why would you want to do that? This film is a start of an all new series which does not have any continuity ties with the previous four films from the 1989-1997 series. I think you'd just be wasting your time by trying to tie this new start into the last thereby reducing the efforts of Mr. Nolan. It'd also help if people didn't think that Batman Begins is a "prequel" and start knowing it's a whole new series. Just wish that this would get into peoples heads. What's in the 1989-1997 series I think you can futz around with all you want but until the new series has established itself as a trilogy first then I'd support you in doing this. Other than that I just think it's futile. Sorry for being negative but this kinda stuff just irks me. I apologise.

WHAT?!?! That film has an AMAZING score. I own the soundtrack cd, and it is anything but weak. It's quite spooky. The best part is that it doesn't rely so much on blaring themes as it does in subtle backgrounds and undertones, resulting in a much more effective score.

Agreed, I think Hans Zimmers score is awesome.

I suggested "Batman Ascends" to BOF. Hopefully Jett will include that in his next title poll.

Anyhoo, I couldn't say enough good stuff about this movie back when it came out. It my favorite movie of the year (yes, moreso than ROTS, which shouldn't take a genius to know why) and I think a worthy contender for Best Picture that'll never get the nod.

As for Zimmer's score, both times that I've seen it, the music has been stuck in my head for days afterward. Interestingly, I'm starting to really get into Hans Zimmer's head, having dissected Hannibal and Pearl Harbor, and just grooving on Batman Begins (not to mention my passionate love for the Gladiator score). I was never so sure about what his style was, I just always liked it. Wanna hear something weird? Years ago, my wife and I waltzed at our wedding to the theme from True Romance (also by Zimmer). A handful of my movie buddies were audibly floored by that choice. Everybody else just thought we'd chosen a nice calypso piece. Ha!

I kind of thought that fan edits were for films that needed something fixed or in some cases, to incorporate deleted scenes to bring about an extended edition. This film needs nothing, lacks nothing, and is one of the best films of the past few years. I went in with reserved expectations having hated the Schitmaker films and not even really having warmed to Burton's for anything other than nostalgia of the early 90's and was totally and completely blown away. THIS is the Dark Knight that I loved as a child. It has taken the original Donner Superman's place as my favorite comic book film of all time.

Bob Kane would be very proud.

I have to say that I am still a big fan of Keaton and Nicholson, but this is a tremendously well done version.

I look forward to having the two-disc sets of both versions.

I guess that would be interesting, as well as aid in building continuity from a Burtonized Begins to the first good batman movies with the late porkins... eating sandwhiches and getting shot, what a guy, just can't stay alive in these movies. Seriously though, anything with teh scarecrow that got deleted needs to be wedged into someone's edit if that's ever done.

Editing Begins to relate to the previous Batman movies is silly (sorta like tailoring the OT to fit the PT)-- there isn't even a Jack Napier character in the comics, and the Joker didn't kill Bruce Wayne's parents anyway. "Joe Chill" DID originally kill his parents in the comics, but they changed that in early '90's (I believe) to an anonymous killer (or "no-name bum") to make Batman's quest make more sense (he'll never find or catch the killer), and for his fight against crime to be more focused than always be shadowed by an ongoing revenge for something that happened in the 1940's (real time)-- a change which I actually like.

Of course Begins is substantially better than Schumacher's crap (Forever gets too much credit, and it's more stinker than winner)-- but that wasn't gonna be hard to pull off, and I think as "better" as this flick was, it was overpraised by a lot of people because the last one was just so bad in comparison. As a Batgeek, I thought it was a good but not great movie. The suit was cool, and its origin was very well done. The Scarecrowe was a good, if slightly underdeveloped villain (a little too Joker-esque near the end, though). Michael Caine made a suprisingly wonderful Alfred, as did Gary Oldman=Gordon, and Morgan Freeman was a good, if kind of pointless gadget man (Batman didn't used to get his stuff from Q or M, but whatever, it worked).

Bale was not bad, but not all that great. Any number of current, random, similarly aged actors would've done as serviceable of a job. It doesn't help that once again, Bruce Wayne wasn't given all that much to do (only a couple neat scenes), and few chances to actually be a detective. The training sequence was overlong, and the sight of a bearded Wayne is laughable (I may be wrong, but in 60 years of comics, he rarely, if EVER had a beard). Plus, Bruce Wayne trained himself to be a fighter and detective, not under the tutelage of some mysterious guru in Tibet or whatever. The Wayne parents murder *was* done poorly, and the father stuff was overly soap-operatic/melodramatic. The childhood stuff with the little girl was garbage. The Joe Chill angle was blah (and why remake that portion if it was already filmed previously?)-- and Bruce Wayne contemplating shooting him was ridiculously out of character. Katie Holmes' character was a waste of space, and yet another excuse to give Bruce a "love interest", when Batman is probably comics' loneliest superhero (rightfully so). The Batmobile tank car was an ugly joke, I don't care how "practical" it was-- the Batmobile is one of the coolest and most iconic images (even in its many incarnations), and to take all the design and style and visual flair out of it is just sad. The fight scenes, which are the money shots in a Batman flick, were piss-poorly shot, and super-zoomed-in so you could barely make out what was going on (why?). For the ever-dumbed-down audience of the masses, the constant reminders that Bruce feels guilty about his pops (but apparently, not his mom?), and that Gotham is a cesspool of crime were annoying-- okay, I GET it. Gotham itself (apparently just Chicago with some CGI assistance) lacks the comic-book grandeur of Burton's sets and films-- it wasn't as much of a character as it was before. Batman letting Ras meet his doom was out of character (so was him letting the Joker croak, but that doesn't make it any less inappropriate here). The sequel set-up was kinda cheeseball-- if Bats ain't dead, of course he lives to fight another villain another day. Show that symbol and fade out.

Okay, so I'm nitpicky. As flawed as Burton's '89 Batman was itself, it was more of a unique, cinematic vision and the merging of his weird style with the Bat motif still holds up well to me. A lot of things were sort of left for you to figure out, and it was more atmospheric, instead of beating you over the head with the plot, and Bruce's plight. I don't think Begins captures the character's essence any better than Burton's attempts. Actually, I think pound for pound, the animated Batflicks are better overall movies (esp. Mask of the Phantasm and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker). I just think, as much of an improvement over the previous drivel of Batman & Robin of course Begins was, it still missed the mark enough for me that I wasn't that satisfied.

I'd love to see an edit addressing the things I mentioned. [I mean, why edit it if you're not gonna tinker?] But right now, that's for some industrious, would-be editor with the necessary equipment to decide, and for me to ponder. Or make a rough, Macrovision-laden edit of.

I'll say it once again. This film is the start of an all new series and has absolutely NO ties with the 1989-1997 series! Just forget to even think of making an edit of this until this ALL-NEW series has three films under its belt. It's also a huge waste of time to even consider a project of this type right now. Just forget it.

I'd have to agree with DarkGryphon--I'd like to see the talented editors devote their time and resources to a film that more desperately needs editing than Batman Begins. Secondly, there isn't a whole lot of extra material to work with, and the movie is intended to stand up as its own narrative, rather than serving as a prequel to the other films. If you want to fix something, fix the POS films that were made in the 90s--Greencapt has already taken care of Batman & Robin...

Someone actually editing this might consider cutting out the Hulk Hogan Mobile, the cretinous "twist" that was about as secret as the identity of "The Masked Magician"... and using cues from Shirley Walker's score for the animated series instead of the bland nonscore that the film has.

The film desperately needs it. I don't care if someone is a Zimmer fan, that's fine and I'm sure they can find the subtlety of it. However, this is a comic book movie with larger than life villians and out of this world hereos. It needs a grandeous theme or atleast motif. Zimmer seems more as if he doesn't want the score to be a character, when the scores have been just as much a strong part of Superman: The Movie and Batman (89) as the actors were.

I'm not watching Memento. I'm watching a very well done superhero movie. Don't put me to sleep with the music, give me a theme that will get me up on the edge of my seat. Everytime John Williams did that 3 note intro to the main Superman title you knew Supes was about to appear on screen. You knew the hero was going to save the day. Zimmer's score of BB is just ambient noise.

If someone would add the themes from the previous Batman films into Batman Begins, I'd be all for it.
