My personal choice is to steer clear of dual layer for the time being.

To achieve a slight increase in quality*:

The upload time is doubled.
Blanks are 4 times as expensive.
Compatibility problems seem to be tenfold.

I may get a dual layer burner when this current burner packs up, but I'm not going to be in a big hurry to start using it.

* If using a digital source. Using laserdisc/TV/VHS, any quality increase is doubtful.
