There can be bad batches or bad brands of DVDs, at least I've found this to be the case in my experience. I will never buy another HP DVDr if I can help it... too many coasters or worse the very 'freeze-up' that you describe.

That said, you might want to try another program to burn your discs with as well. For DVD image files (as are generally created with Shrink) you should give DVDDecrypter a try- I actually use that program almost exclusively for buring image file and I use Nero for burning DVD folder structure files (VIDEO_TS). Always be sure to use the 'verify' feature of whatever software you use because it'll save a lot of frustration later in front of the TV.

Another thing to look for is the speed that you're burning at. My DVD writer is 'capable' of 8x speed but 75% of the time if I burn a 8x disc at 8x speed I end up with corrupt data and a coaster. Maybe you just need to take it sllooooowwwwweeerrrr...
