1978 or 1981 ?

So I'm reading "The Cinema of George Lucas", (great book) and I just read that the title "Episode IV A New Hope" was added in the July re-release of 1978. I always thought and read that it was added in the 1981 re-release. What's the deal?

IIRC, it was first seen on screen in 1981. But as far as when it was actually added, 78' makes sense, since Lucas would have reallized that year that Episodes V and VI were then able to be made.

The book may be wrong, I have always thought it first appeared on the crawl in '81,but maybe it was thought of in '78, I know its a very long time ago but I dont remember the Episode 4 title added until a quite a few years after the original release of Star Wars.

the book is wrong. It first appeared in the forged screenplay in The Art of Star Wars, released in 1978, but it didnt make it into the 78 theatrical re-release. In fact, Episode V was the first time ppl saw an "episode" onscreen. Likely, they filmed the alternate Episode IV title at the same time as doing the titles for Empire in 1980. the 1981 release was the debut of Episode IV.

I've often considered concocting an alternate title card sequence with each of the films in the OT, having NO episode in front of any of them, and setting them to the "theme" song of the episode, just to see how it would work. e.g. Having the Empire Strikes Back logo recede instead of the Star Wars logo, and setting it to the Imperial March.

With the prequels, there wasn't really a good logo that featured the episode name. They were all about the episode number, with the name as an afterthought. And with names like "The Phantom Menace" who cares anyway.

In many ways, Lucas tied himself down too much by putting episode numbers into the crawls.
I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

I would like to see that, and it would give some uniqueness to those great edits....

That is an awesome idea, ADM. What song would you use for ROTJ, the Emperor's Theme?

And, yeah, I would love to have seen an actual logo for the prequel titles. Stupid episode numbering bull crap. I try to look at it from a non-fan perspective and it just seems stupid to hear fans talking about their favorite movies by saying a number. "Yeah. Two is my favorite." "Maybe, but Five has a lot of good elements." Geez, are we talking about pieces of cinema or a vehicle or a computer? It's just another thing that makes us look stupid to the common folk.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Yes. I concur. All of the films should have been released with individual titles, similar to how the James Bond films were. Can you imagine the Bond fans saying "I like number five and all the early ones, but number twenty and all the new ones are stupid."

I didn't mind them until they started supplanting the actual titles. Just like I didn't mind the prequels until they started altering the originals to fit to them.
