The Wookiee planet scenes are there to further enforce the fact that there is a war going on. Plus, it acts as a plot point to have Yoda away from Coruscant, just as the Utapau scenes were partly a plot point to have Obi-Wan away from Coruscant as well.

Like Lucas has said, "you can't please everyone." For example, there are some who have complained because so little of the Clone Wars are shown in the films as it is.
