I don't even know why there are scenes of the Wookiee planet and of Chewy.

I read the novelization of the movie and none of the wookiee planet and chewy scenes are in the book. Apparently Lucas decided at the last minute, "Oh! I know! Let's connect another useless dot and put Chewbacca in the movie! Yeah!"
