Thanks for those. The paintings aren't a huge loss as that whole introduction is rather annoying and I usually skip it. The deleted scenes look a helluva lot cleaner than I expected them to, though.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

How can we not tamper with this film?

Not to brag, but to make a small point.
It had only taken me about 2 weeks (in my spare time) to re-do the blue within blue eyes on the FanFiltration Edit of DUNE. You would think that MCA would dish out a few bucks to someone out there (**Waves hands in Air**) to do that for an official version right?

How cheap is that, and why do they hold back all this footage? Why not release the complete scenes? Sure, I can understand when different studios produce extras and don’t allow those extras to be transferred to other companies around the world (eg. "Impressions of Dune"), or who may later release that same title. But dang, give the fans what the fans want. All MCA needs to do is visit to a few DUNE fan sites and newsgroups to see what we have been demanding for years. Time and time again I saw people bitching about the missing blue eyes and the bad re-use of spfx shots in the T.V. version. Well, MCA and this DVD still have not fixed those two major fan sore points!

I'm giving notice, that the only time I will ever buy this title again (I have at least 6 official versions of this film not including the new one), is if and ONLY IF the words "OFFICAL DAVID LYNCH DIRECTOR'S CUT" is on the cover.

Now, battles we still have a chance to win:

"MK2 is meeting with Lynch in the next few weeks to continue negotiations for the 2 Disc Collectors Edition of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. In these next few months, the fate will be decided if MK2 will be releasing Deleted Scenes for this DVD. The 2 Disc Special Edition release has been pushed back to mid 2006 to allow for the final negotiations and to prepare additional extras for this release."

FF,

I'll be first in line to get the 2.0 version with the newly released Deleted Scenes. Hopefully if we keep our fingers crossed, Lynch & MK2 will make a deal soon and Fire Walk With Me scenes will make the light of day. Then after that, there's always Blue Velvet...

Maybe it's been said, but what is different in the alternate ending provided in the deleted scenes?
Also, will that be used in Fanfiltration 2.0?

If anyone is interested, I've matched the deleted scenes on the DVD to the scenes in the 6th and 7th drafts, see the details on my site at:

http://www.duneinfo.com/giedi_prime/dvd_extended/

Hopefully it may make it easier for someone to edit them in!

Maybe it's been said, but what is different in the alternate ending provided in the deleted scenes?

The difference is that Paul takes Irulan as his wife. Not really an alternate ending, just an extended one really.

In other words the really real ending.
Do they go so far as to explain her standing as wife and why she is narrating the story?

In my opinion, I don't think all the new deleted scenes should be added to a fan edit. The new reverend mother scene for example basicly gives the same information that the normal intro gives. Some of these scenes where basiclly scenes that were replaced in lue of a shorter "second half" for dune, The water of life scene for example was to be very different and much longer.

The problem with DUNE as a film (at least in it's current form) is getting around all the exposition. The Fellowship of the Ring, solved the very same problem by creating the back story intro that we have, with out that intro, you would be further bogged down in ring history, etc. While the Prologue for Dune gives us a nice back history, it comes off as little more then a collection of narrated paintings.

If I were to do a fan edit "prologue" I would created a title scroll usuing that back story, but presenting it better.

Adding the Irulan extended intro would add a little more strength do the begining, but it would be nice to have more.

What software did you use to achieve this? After Effects? I would think keyframing this would be a real pain. Could you post a still of your work?

Newbie question here... what is FanFiltration? How do I see some of their work? I've been re-editing movies for years and would love to see someone else's work.

I want to see your re-edit! Whatever it is!

So here's a question. When the Dune DVDs hit shelves, the store sale flyers were saying the extended version was "Never Before Seen".
Except for being a new widescreen transfer of it, did they make other changes?

The sticker doesn't say "Never Before Seen", it says "Never Before Available", which is accurate in the US.

Before I get started, I wanted to say thanks to Fanfiltration for bringing us the Ultimate version of DUNE.

As for the new DVD -

Actually, it is the shorter of the Extended Versions. It.s not the Extended Version that was released on Japanese laserdiscs. The cut I have is 194 mins long and includes all scenes - including the heartbrusting scene. I think I snet in to Rikter to Author, the DVD is fullscreen 2 disc and is available. I think I sent it to him, or is it in the next box of movies I am sending him..... ?? I'll check

Anyways, the cut I have is the clearest known version of the (Longest Known Version) the new DVD is clearer but is not this version.

The New DVD runs 177 mins and is the edited for TV content version. BTW!! It's not really 194 mins, this version includes the crediits on each disc, presenting a two parter. It actually runs around 188 minus those intros.

If I did send it to RIK, he will tell you it's frickin sweat... And I guess it's the best we have for now....

If anyone wants to attempt to Extend the Extended Verision New DVD widescreen they could convert it to 16:9 wide and crop slightly my fullscreen scenes that were edited to create a all-new 16:9 wide cut and this would be the longest known version. One slight prioblem would be the soundtrack in these scenes added, would have to be 2.0 versus 5.1 for the rest but I guess you can't have cake and eat it too.

Also, it looks as if the last three DVD deleted scenes were cut at the last minute, they all have music and sound effects with them. Funny after all these years we finally know that all this time there was a version in widescreen of the TV cut, lmao!!!! So they must have cut it together with deleted footage shortly after the failured theatrical for TV ( or could it have been the long lost 4 hour cut that everones delies??
Which makes me wonder, all of these years this cut has been locked in a vault somewhere with noone talking about it and then suddenly it shows up for this release. We all knew there was a extended cut becuase of the bootlegs but we all thought it was peaced together with other sourced material and cropped and edited material, turns out NO...

Makes me aslo wonder if this alleged 134 min Superman 4 exists somewhere also?

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.

Ran across this link describing differences between the various versions.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

Video Watchdog is GREAT! I have those very issues, and that is what I used as a guide for building the FanFiltration edit of DUNE.
Sean Murphy also did a similar article on the "Highlander 2" variations.

So, I got my copy of the new DVD release. First off, I am not very excited with the deleted scenes. The only parts I can see including in the FanFiltration 2.0 Edit are the ones from the end of the movie, the Shadout Shouts bit, and some of the death of Jamis. I would not change the intro to the film at all. Most of the out-takes are just not good production, sound, or acting wise. Based on this DVD's selection of out-takes, it seems to me that most of the cuts that had been made to the prolog and rest of DUNE were a very wise move. Also, I still think they are holding some good un-used footage back.

The new DVD extras are nice, and the DVD keep case is great! I think the keep case is the best part of the re-release, and I have a good feeling it had alot to do with the hold up of this release. There was rumor that the set at one point (due to some type of technical problem) was going to have to be a two disc set. Now I could see that leading to problems with that style of keep case.
Not to take away from this set, but it would have been nice if it had a small booklet of production art included. Kind of like the one included with the U.K. set.

If other people want to take on an edit of Dune, please go for it! At some point I do plan on making an anamorphic version of my edit (including some of the new out-take footage), but it's not at the top of my list.

I agree. The issue I have is the obviously lower quality of these scenes, both image-wise and sound-wise. Perhaps some music might help, but the image will be noticably lower in quality than the "normal" scenes.

Agreed. Some of the acting is awful -- my guess is they were planing on fixing this in looping.

I'm doing one. I utterly loathe the editing done to the extended version, however. Those voice overs are painful, and the use of music is dreadful -- it's like they had no clue about how to effectively use it. The pervasive use of music creates another problem -- the theatrical release has many scenes with no music or different music, and then you insert a "new" scene and suddenly the music changes!

I would be more willing to bet the hold up was the DVD-18 format. There are fewer places capable of producing them and they are dodgy to start with.
In fact thedigitalbits.com is reporting some problems with the Dune DVDs for this very reason.
DVD-18s are not a great idea, they should have stuck with a 2 disc set...

Sad to hear FanFiltration is throwing in the towel. So who IS doing a new fan edit?

I agree that the acting in most of the deleted scenes are not great. I feel that even though the extended opening acting is not great, we really need more expisition to help us roll along (just as the lord of the rings opening help set the tone). other then that I don't think most of those deleted scenes fit. I think the death of Jamus is a great moment to complete the scene from the extened version of the film. I don't feel that the Shadout Shouts bit works or fits if it were added in. The only other scene I would say that should probably be added is the death of thufar.

Hi gang, My first post here. SOme of you might know me from AVSforum. I will be working on a new edit for this film and it will be in HIGH DEFINITION. We have the theatrical version in glorious 2.35:1 1080i from HDNet Movies and it blows the DVD away. For the additions we will use the new DVD and likely the last two deleted scenes, all upconverted to 1080i.

All editing will be done in Final Cut Pro and the ultimate release will be available in 1080i and also as a duel layer DVD for those of you with no HD capabilities.

Currently we are in the research stage and will be in that stage for some time. Do not expect a finished product until at least year's end. We do not want to F this up.

I was going to attempt a STAR WARS Trilogy edit, but now that I have discovered this place maybe I do not need to? I've been reading here for HOURS and I still have no idea what version I should get.

I want Duel Layer and PCM sound. AC3 conversion loses far too much quality. That is why I used the PCM from the laserdiscs for my own personal Star Wras Trilogy DVD edit, using the CAV LD's sourced from a tweaked Pioneer CLD-97 and then converted to anamorphic. This was before DUel Layer, so I made them two diskers. COmpresing to a single layer would have been terrible.

Any advice?
