speaking of dune, fans should check out both the unabridged audiobook on cd and the hardcover of the road to dune. Quite an awesome book from Kevin J.anderson, brian herbert and unpublished bits from frank herbert.t
I haven't seen this anywhere online, do you have a link for the cd(s) ?

BTW, it's nice to see a fan edit of a movie I'm so familiar with. I often miss the nuances of what tweaks have been made to a film but, in this case, I'm able to catch and appreciate all of them. Hats off to FanFiltration!

Will there be a version 2 of the Fanfiltration edit?
In all likelihood the long overdue extended DVD will be a new transfer/re-edit since the original Alan Smithee version may only exist in Full Frame.
This means better quality source, and possibly completed special effects.
That's my assumption as to why the DVD has taken longer than they anticipated.
Also the Deleted Scenes include an alternate ending which MAY have the explanation of Paul marrying Irulian.
I'm just saying that a lot of what's missing that we are all looking for may be yet to come.
If half of what I'm guessing is true I'd love to see this project rebooted.

I am sorry to say that the text commentary was cancelled on the DUNE Fanfiltration Edit at the last moment. The edit was taking much too long to finish, and I wanted to get it out to the fans as soon as I could. In it's place, a video edit of alt. scenes and the original Soundtrack album has been included with the extras on disc two. As soon as MCA video puts out more DUNE out-take footage, I will be building a version 2.0 DVD set. In that future set I can include the text commentary and make other improvments fans want.

I have heard from a fan who has, in his possession, the new "Extended Edition". Here's what he has found so far...
"...First, the good news: The anamorphic widescreen transfer of the 137-minute theatrical cut has been corrected for this new DVD master. If you recall, the previous version saw about a third of the film's print incorrectly flip-flopped, which simply did not jibe with what we remembered about the film in its previous video incarnations.
In addition, the DVD contains a section of deleted scenes that runs approximately 18 minutes in length. Some of the cut scenes that were rumored to have been filmed, among them Thufir Howat's death at the end of the film, are indeed present on this new DVD. Raffaella de Laurentiis confirmed that these were taken from the film's original 4-hour version Lynch assembled.
Now, the bad news: And there's quite a bit to share with you thus far:
- The extended version is still credited to Alan Smithee.
- The DVD lists the extended version as 2.35:1. This is not the case. It is in fact a 1.85:1 format, with the production painting prologue presented in a matted 1.85:1 format that removes some of the images from the screen. This is definitely not how we remember the extended version that was first telecast in 1988.
- The edit of the extended version retains all of those "extra" scenes that were sloppily edited together for broadcast, including the "scene" of the Reverend Mother's trip to Caladan. The shortened clip involving the Harkonnens is edited in this DVD, and the clip of Thufir Howat observing the destruction of the weirding modules is cut from the extended version (conforming to the extended version's broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel a few years ago, though that clip was retained as the final scene of Part 1 of the extended telecast back in 1988 - go figure).
- The theatrical trailer that was on the previous release has been bumped from this new DVD. Thankfully, I have kept the widescreen tape of the "erroneous" transfer, which has the trailer on it - no "D'oh!" this time around!
- No audio commentary from David Lynch or anyone involved in the film's production.
- All of the deleted scenes are culled from the film's workprint and are in production audio only, with the quality of the deleted scenes in a fairly good format (better than the deleted scenes on the "Star Trek" movie DVDs, but far from equal quality with both versions of the film.
- No audio commentary from Alan Smithee, either! I wonder why nobody has ever heard from him to begin with... (Gotta love the whole running gag! Heehee!)
- If you remember, at the time of the film's release in 1984 Waldenbooks released an audiotape commentary with David Lynch and Frank Herbert on translating "Dune" to film. I clearly remember getting this tape, but for the life of me I never had sense to keep it. This would have made for a great audio commentary addition on the DVD."
So the door is definitely open to do yet another fan-made extended cut of DUNE in the future. Questions, class?

I can only hope that Brian Herbert And Kevin J. Anderson along with the herbert estate can Make a " New" big screen version of dune close to frank's orginal without taken too many liberties. Special Effects have come a long enough way to do some of the scenes from the books back in the day that would have been too expensive.
Yes I can Remember when Dune was originally released and at the time it was lauded as one of the most expensive films ever made up until that point.

Which is damn ironic since he won't fix his version (and I doubt he plans to remake it).
The problems of the SciFi version not with standing, they still produced a more faithful imagining of the books. It's a shame they didn't do a bit better (that goes double for Children of Dune).
I'll still watch any other books they want to adapt though...

Firstly, both prints ARE in fact in 2.35:1. They both look great, the colors are rich and the pictures are sharp, the sound mix sounds great. However, the production painting prologue IS matted (but not in 1.85:1, matted in 2.25:1). Also the "blue within blue eyes" have not been added in the added scenes. I haven't actually watched either film yet so I can't get more detailed then that for now.
I have seen 2 of the featurettes, very cool and in depth, intervies while showing cool production drawing and effects tests and production outtakes. Haven't seen the deleted scenes yet.
