Sometimes it depends on what media is used, cheap media tends to be less compatible with older players. You'd have to check out a resource webpage such as dvdrhelp.com to see if your player can play any kind of burned discs. Generally, only (some) 2nd or 3rd generation models or newer can do so. PS2's are poor dvd players anyway, so if your standalone player is really that old, you might consider buying a new one, especially considering how inexpensive they are now.
