That actually is true. Palpatine, even though never said in the OT, was his actual name. I even remember back in like 1997 my friend and I were calling him Emperor "Turpentine" because we thought we were hilarious and were so witty at word play.
The same goes for Leia Organa. Even though her last name is never said in the movie, her name was plastered all over the toys and books and 100 piece puzzle sets.
