I guess 'adaptive' could be line-adaptive or motion-adaptive or even system-adaptive in any case I don't think any of the philips saa71** chips has a 3D combfilter.

The Compro Videomate Ultra card i.e. is based on saa7134 but it uses a NEC 3D combfilter chip and only for NTSC. And also a 3D filter would require a frame buffer and this is usually a separate memorychip on the card.

I wonder if anyone in the X0 project could help me with a screen shot from the X0 master? I want this frame (nr 7 in the screenshot thread), just as it is:

I just installed the PDI delux card and Huffyuv + virtualdub. Now, I'm green at this, can anyone help me what settings I should have for optimal composite capture? RGB 24, RGB 16 or RGB32? And all kind of settings for the best capture.

/Thanks in advance

Two of the better resources on this would be zion and MeBeJedi. Conveniently, they're X0 Project guys. I would PM either of those two, or contact them through the X0 Project site. Or by any other means...?

I don't mean to sound like a big jerk, but I don't really think this forum -- or this thread, anyway -- is the place to be discussing fresh-out-of-the-box capturing tutorials. Personally, I don't read this particular thread to re-learn all the stuff I already know about capturing. I want to come here to read about the results of something new and different from (and presumably BETTER than) what I'm doing!

In other words, I'd rather see you get up to speed capturing-wise in a capturing-specific thread or forum, and THEN post the new, amazing results here for the rest of us to drool over!

(If nowhere else, you could always post in the Tech sub-forum here on OT.com. There is an X0-specific thread there, isn't there? If not, there should be.)

Hi Nin,

I don't know if this helps, but I found this in Virtual Dub's documentation here.

"Which capture format should I choose if I'm going to use video compression?
Ultimately, you will need to choose a format which is compatible with the codec, but if you have a choice, always choose YUY2, UYVY, or YVYU over RGB24. Here's why:

TV cards generally use one of two chips, either the Zoran ZR36120 (FlyVideo-derived devices), or the Brooktree/Conexant BT8x8 series (everyone else). If you look at the datasheets for these chips you will find that they either accept YUV 4:2:2 data from the decoder or produce it internally. Guess how they produce RGB24 data when you ask for it? You guessed it, the YUV 4:2:2 data is upsampled to RGB24. This means that the extra color resolution that RGB24 gives is entirely fabricated.

Choosing YUY2/UYVY/YVYU over RGB24 typically gives you a sizable speed increase, and gives you better compression with Huffyuv.

RGB16 introduces horrible banding and signal loss, while RGB32 just adds an extra 8-bits of junk to RGB24. There is no point in using either."

Hope that helps.

Patrick

I have been playing around with this setting black level with some capture I have done. The reason is, when I compare a DVD screengrab with a LD screengrab, the LD will look washed out because of the different black level. Now, using same stuff as in this great artical, I can change the widescreen borders from 19 IRE to 0 IRE like a DVD. But how should I do not to effect white level? Will it also go down, or how should I do?

>>As far as I know, ocpmovie was working from the 2004 DVDs and undoing most of the SE elements as best he could, which is more in the vein of creating an "ideal" version (like mverta or Darth Editous) than preservation as such.

"Most" of the SE elements? Try all of the SE elements. I was not creating my own idealized version mixing and matching versions, I was recreating the original theatrical versions in high DVD quality as best as humanly possible, presenting the best possible version of the films.

Doing this does require you to make certain choices on which version of the film to emulate, particularly with sound. For Star Wars, elements of the mono or stereo mix. For Empire, elements of the 35mm or 70mm.

I made specific choices to create the best theatrical quality experience. The result is Star Wars as it was, in high quality.

The result is infinitely preferable to watching a poor quality laserdisc, and should be enjoyable even for pedants.

Any new news?

I know, patience is a virtue, and a Jedi craves not these things...

So how's everything coming along?

Yes, I will give my left nut for a general status update on the project.

I know you usually frown upon such requests and really don't have any use for my left nut but the little guy is shady and has betrayed me in the past so I'm just looking for a good excuse to get rid of him.

I have terrible news. I already cut my left nut off anticipating the trade for the status update.

I regret nothing.

I just wanted to subscribe to the thread and I couldn't figure out a way to do it without replying.

God I have to get this, some of the screengrabs compare pretty damn close to the 04 dvds (sans the color 'correction' in the 04, frankly its like watching a cartoon--Jesus Christ a blue Tantive, a green Death Star, A blue second Death Star, there's a freaking rainbow in the background in Millenium Falcon when Luke's practicing with that God damned green lightsaber)

LOL...welcome to the boards. The work is slow but ongoing. I recently lost two hard drives: one won't power up (150GB), and the other lost its partition (200GB), so my second computer is down, and I have to juggle projects a lot more.

The holidays slow things down. My workcenter is having some huge inspections over the next few weeks so I'll be working at least 6 days a week. Not much time to work on the project. I'll be back with a vengence next month hopefully. For now I'm just lurking mostly; doing the "mod" thing.

nin, I'd still like to help you out as much as I can. Please email me at "feedback at x0project dot com".

any updates?

thanks for doing this project and preserving the oot. I can't believe the quality you guys are getting out of the X0 player a cut above the other players for transfers for sure. How much would an X0 player set someone back?

Thanks for the updates. I know the matte lines won't be fixed but what about the mismatch in contrast and saturation with some of the poorer composited blue screen shots. Examples that really stick out for me are Luke falling in cloud City, the speeder bikes and the Rancor.

Color and brightness notwithstanding, the Rancor scene is one of the few things they really got right on the 2004 DVD.
