My take on this whole ordeal is that Obi-Wan was ashamed of his failure of saving Anakin from Sidious. He also may have been reluctant to admit that he couldn't bring it over his heart to perform a coup-de-gras on Vader. Bottom line: Even Jedi are human (even the alien raced ones).
