The film is extremely easy to download... and you can make a DVD-R of it then. I made myself one a while ago:

this preservation badly needs to be done as it was not even on the supplementals on the redux dvd. Word is that Warners own's the right to it and not coppola, and they could not agree on a fee agreement, so it is defintely never going to see the light of day. Even though it is one of the most requested of documentaries to be released on dvd at amazon.com.

Another reason to own a laserdisc player!

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

To say it will never see the light of day is pushing it, it could take a long time, a very long time. But distribution deals are struck and change hands all the time, and it's only a matter of time.

Is there a copy of a laserdisc version of this film floating around?

I thought private messages were disabled on this site now... I haven't been able to create one or open existing ones for a few months now.

Anyway, pick anything from the top of hublist.org - every bigger place will have at least ten sources of the film.

Anyone with a version of this care to post it to the newgroups? It'd be greatly appreciated.

I've seen several LD-to-DVD transfers and the results have normally been lackluster. This isn't because of the folks doing the transfers, but because the source was in pretty bad shape to begin with. If there's any modern film that needs a restoration badly, it's this one.

I thought I read in another thread about this documentary that it was released as part of a 2 dvd version of AN Redux in France. Can anyone chime in here and let me know if I read that correctly?

According to this, it's not on the French set.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

I have this on DVD. My friend took an original VHS and did the transfer. I designed the menus using music from the CD soundtrack. Everything from the VHS is part of the "package": the advert for the Apocalypse Now VHS is an "extra", the goofy advert for renting films from your local video store is an easter egg. Scans of the VHS box front and back are viewable, and another screen details the transfer process utilized.

I don't torrent, but I'm always willing to entertain a snail mail trade offer. I'm looking for Star Wars related stuff.

again i think itd be awesome to make "more complete dossier" or something like that that includes this, the workprint, and the original features, like the Kurtz compound destruction. If matching box art could be created, this could be an awesome thing.
I'm always looking to trade my edits, if you don't want to get them from a torrent. PM or e-mail!

Well, I never bothered to do any artwork for the Hearts of Darkness DVD until I bought the "Complete" Dossier release. So I started by creating an original image (I wasn't interested in seeing the VHS cover on my DVD) using the Apocalypse Now poster that features the river going up the middle with a sun above the horizon and a line of distant helicopters and also using a picture of Coppola with a gun to his head.

I scanned the plain back of the Complete Dossier package in an attempt to create a framing background to compliment the AN:CD release. Unfortunately, the brown is too light right now. In lieu of darkening the color, I've searched for paper that looks like cardboard to print the artwork on. I've had no luck at all. Just today my wife suggested I use a grocery bag. I'm gonna give that a try, and if it doesn't work, then I'll use the scanned background and darken it.

As for the workprint, I was just going to scan the standard AN DVD release and change "Widescreen Collection" at the bottom to read "5-hour Workprint Edition" or something like that.

As for supplemental material, I got the Circuit City bonus disc, which seems to be lacking only the theater program. As an aside...
<rant>Why oh why did they not make Complete Dossier a 3-disc set? Yes, I understand why "Hearts of Darkness" wasn't on there. But if some exclusive bonus disc has to be offered, that means they couldn't fit everything on there that they did have. Correct me if I'm wrong: both previous releases of AN and Redux were on one disc a piece. So repeat that for Complete Dossier, and then fill the third disc with all the extras plus the Circuit City bonus ones that couldn't fit. Jeez. I was prepared to pay $20 for this thing anyway and got it for $13. I would have paid for a third disc!</rant>

Okay, sorry. Anyhow, I created a CD-Extra that presents Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre production of Heart of Darkness in CD-Audio. The CD-ROM content on this disc has the complete 6-Nov-1938 broadcast (they also did "Life With Father" that night) in mp3 format, complete text of Joseph Conrad's novel (which is public domain), a bio on Conrad, info on the Mercury Theatre, and pictures of Conrad, Welles, and various covers of HoD books. I saw that there is a Playhouse 90 presentation of Heart of Darkness starring Roddy McDowell and Boris Karloff, but I have yet to get my hands on this. Also, Welles supposedly had a script for Heart of Darkness and shot some test footage. Does anyone know if either of these exist?

Plugging Hearts Of Darkness into a well known auction site brings up a DVD of the television broadcast of Heart Of Darkness from 1958 - so copies are floating about.
