I've recently begun to appreciate wine. For most of my life I didn't like it at all, and am trying to educate myself on the subject. A good resource is Wine.com (they offer monthly wine clubs, as well and an awesome selection). I'm just wondering if anyone's got a favorite wine? What do you eat with it? Have you ever been to a winery?

I opened a bottle of Ruffino Chianti, 2004 over the weekend. Believe it or not, I paired it with some ziti and marinara with some red pepper and bread. It was OUTSTANDING. Nice and sweet. Excllent Italian table wine.

I used to think those guys who smelt the wine and spoke about 'bouquet' and wine that tastes of 'strawberries with a hint of oak and citrus' were talking crap, but then, during my student days, I worked in a wine shop and had to complete a number of courses etc and really developed an appreciation. I still remember most of it today and often impress people with my wine knowledge (most people just grab whattever from the supermarket and don't really understand it). I don't drink anymore, and the only thing I miss is the occasional glass of good wine. Are you a red or a white man Sage? I'm definitely a red fan.

My favourites are (or were) pretty much any Chilean Merlot or, if I was having white, I used to enjoy a South African Chardonnay called 'Arniston Bay' (great with ANY seafood). Bulgaria also made some good reds, and at the time I was working, Australian wines were the big thing, but things change so quickly and a country that was producing good wine a year ago might not be anymore, so I guess none of that really helps.

Not a big fan of wine......but I drank a lot of Boone's Strawberry Hill in high school.

Just like beer: after 5-6 bottles, you really don't mind the flavor anymore.

I haven't really tried any whites yet. Before I started trying to learn about it, I used to just buy Merlot because it was a good match for a lot of foods. I bought a bottle of Valdevieso Merlot around Christmas. That is Chilean although I have not yet opened it.

I'm trying to think of a good wine for beef, although I'm difficult in that regard in that it seems like almost all wines demand rare beef. I can't have even a HINT of pink in my meat. Must be well done.

I guess the classic choice for steak is Cabernet Sauvignon. But I would say that while it's definitely true that certain wines really compliment and enhance a meal, and some can really kill a meal by making it seem to try of acidic, etc, try not to get too hung up on wine/food matching and if you like it, that's all that matters. So maybe use Cabernet Sauvignon as a starting point and experiment.

JediSage, when I eat my beef well done, I tend to go with a Baco Noir. It's a rather fruity red, often with a nose of cherry, that goes incredibly with beef, rare or well done. That would be my suggestion.

Cool. Thanks for the idea. Now all I have to do is find someone who carries it.

ah, Wine.

I don't know too much. My father is really into it. All I know is pick a Red with Steak and a White with Seafood. I think I tend to like the Reds the best. I usally prefer Merlots.

Yep, we all learned that by watching From Russia, With Love.

My wife and I are into wine. However, we're still relative novices so we haven't been able to try too much. We do know that she likes rieslings and I'm a fan of cab sauvs and pinot noirs.

Hey guys, looking for some wine recommendations. Im making a pasta dish from this receipe i have and was wondering what might be a good wine to go with it. I havent made this dish before, so ill give some info from the receipe and hopefully that will help suggest what type of wine might go good with it.

basically its a shrimp pasta. The shrimp are sauteed in garlic and the sauce is made up of tomatoes, chicken broth, cilantro and light cream.

so my guess is its gonna be a light sauce, may get some red coloring from the tomatoes.

thanks in advance for the help,

Maybe a Shiraz? Not sure. That's a tough one. If it's going to be spicy I'd go with a shiraz. If a lot of red sauce, Chianti...preferably Carlo Rossi (jug wine with a screw top cap). Very good. Also Ruffino Chianti is fantastic.

based on the receipe it doesnt seem like it would be spicy. I just noticed the receipe description is "Shrimp in a Cilantro Tomato Blush Sauce" dont know if that helps any.

from what i can find about Cilantro online its:
Cilantro's taste is a fragrant mix of parsley and citrus culinarycafe.com
Cilantro has a distinctive green, waxy flavor mccormick.com

so that prob wont add much spice to it, so the big spice is the garlic the shrimp are sauteed in

When in doubt, go with Merlot. It matches well with seafood, chicken, and Italian. Pretty much covering your bases. I like Turning Leaf, but also Valdevieso (Chilean).

Last weekend we got 2 feet of snow on Sunday. I was outside clearing the driveway, hadn't eaten almost all day. Came in and cracked a bottle of Burgundy I bought the day before. First French wine, really looked forward to it. The cork had a lush, deep purple color to it. Well, I drank and promptly became very sick. I think it was a combo of being outside for a long time, and also not eating. I was pissed because I was looking forward to it so much.

Why is it that whenever I think of wine, two movies starring Sandra Oh come to mind: Under the Tuscan Sun and Sideways?

Hey JediSage,

ended up going with the Merlot. I think it worked out good. Thanks for all the wine advice.

The pasta dish was good as well, the woman loved it. though most do love the whole candle lit dinner for two

It's funny that the liquor store in my end of town is moving to a new location, even closer to my house, and my first idea was that I wanted to go in at 9:00 AM Monday morning, as soon as it opens, and buy the first bottle of wine from the new store. Sad, I know.

Glad it worked out. You may want to check out the

Wine.com site, as it has a pretty good Wine 101 section, including information on food pairings.

My wife doesn't really care for wine except for Arbor Mist Pinot Grigio, Tropical Fruits flavor. I just don't get it.

New favorite...Black Opal. Had a glass of their Cabernet/Merlot blend at Outback Steakhouse a couple of weeks ago. FANTASTIC. Wonderfully smooth and a good match for a thick steak. Just great.
