Just found this place, very cool! Looks like some great work is being done. the originals have been out of view for so long, it's depressing. Maybe this is old news, but the dvd of "More American Graffiti" has a beautiful, perfect shot of the old Lucasfilm logo, has anyone used that in one of these projects?

Hi all,

Thanks Citizen for all the hard work!

I have a techincal question...since the source itself it's PAL, how it that possible to capture it under NTSC? I have done some NTSC analog video capturing myself and I know in terms of resolution or resolution there's no problem. However, I don't understand how it's possible to capture 25fps materal in 23.976fps? Or you're capturing straight to 29.97fps?

Thanks!

PAL is captured to PAL, which means capping at 25fps. Not hard to do with most cap cards/apps. Converting to NTSC isn't all that tough, either, since that 25fps was originally 24fps. AviSynth will let you call it 23.976fps, pulldown.exe (among other things) will put flags in the MPEG-2 stream to make it 29.97fps (with no additional frames needed), and the audio from any NTSC edition is already timed to match. Not magic; just a lot of fiddling around.

So...that also means the PAL and NTSC releases have different time durations (in terms of # of second) since the framecounts are the same (I didn't get the NTSC release so can't tell myself...)? I guess I'm not sure what exactly AVISynth does in this case...playing the 23.976fps materal in 25fps (i.e., the PAL release has shorter duration) or actually converting the material from 23.976fps to 25fps (i.e., some frame insertions and blendings involved)?

Hum...you just reminded me that the audio was ripped from the NTSC edition...so the NTSC and PAL releases *must* have the same time duration then?

Converting 25fps PAL film footage to 3:2 pulldown 29.97fps NTSC footage is very easy, just rescale to NTSC size and set the playback framerate to 23.976fps, then after mpeg2 encoding use pulldown.exe to add the 3:2 pulldown flags to the mpeg2 stream.

The PAL & NTSC versions have the same framecount, but to make the NTSC audio match the PAL playback you have to speed it up by 4.096%, a drawback is that this also increases the pitch, I tried timestreching the audio with a few different 'main' audio editing applications to preserve the pitch but it introduced glitches into the audio, not noticable on speech but with orchestral music you can hear them, which I wasn't happy with so I left it with the slightly higher pitch.

In the case of my ANH, the NTSC version runs for 2:01:18 and the PAL runs 1:56:06.

Thx for all the answers Karyudo and Citizen. So are these correct?

1) PAL -> speeded up from original film (23.976fps -> 25fps), higher-pitch audiotrack
2) NTSC -> same framerate as the original film, no alteration to the LD NTSC audiotrack, resized from the PAL capture.

Thanks!

Citizen,

Have you ever thought of making hi def xvids of the fullscreen OOT somehow pasted onto the widescreen version the middle 40 to 50% would have a lot more detail. I know this could be a real nightmare with the pan & scan but what do you think?

Great stuff, thanks segaflip for upping my SW discs to usenet!

HyperYagami, yup that's it. Most PAL DVDs have had their audio sped up to match the increased framerate but occasionally (rarely) they pitch correct the audio or leave the audio alone and framerate convert the video, which isn't a nice thing because the resulting interlaced footage isn't as smooth as playing it at 25fps and doesn't look good on a truly progressive display (ie your PC).

eros, I wouldn't like to try that because matching the foolscreen footage with the widescreen footage seamlessly could prove to be a bit of a nightmare, getting the colour/brightness and cropping/resizing to perfectly match seems quite a daunting task.

ROTJ capturing is going well, this is the film I've been looking forward to completing because I think I like it better than the other two, I did notice that the picture on ROTJ is slightly softer than ANH & ESB, may have to adjust smoothing/sharpening settings so the clarity matches the first two films. Tests to be done.
The merging of the 5x captures is going 25% faster than before, I adjusted a setting in the bios so now the 2.4ghz P4 is running at 3.0ghz had to increase the CPU fan speed a little but that's the only other adjustment I had to do, didn't dare push it above 3.0 because if it wouldn't boot I'd need to reset the bios and I don't know where the jumper is. If I can muster up £160 from somewhere I'm going to upgrade my two 120gb drives for 300gb drives, putting the total system space to about 800gb. Which would be nice.

Thanks, Citizen, for your ANH and ESB.

I didn't plan on getting the ANH NTSC DL, but I changed my mind after seeing the extras on the ESB NTSC DL as compared to the SL.

I agree with you about ROTJ. I only bought the ESB and ROTJ Faces Laserdiscs when they first came out in 1995. I never bothered to get the Faces ANH.

Citizen,

I just stumbled on this project via the newsgroups and let me just say I am estatic! Watching what I have seen so far has made me excited for Star Wars again because it's the Star Wars I grew up with! Watching these I kept thinking to myself, "What is so wrong with these Mr. Lucas?!".

One concern I have though while I am thinking about it is that my DVD9 of Empire stops about half way through, I followed the instructions about the layer switch and all.. have there be any other reported problems or is it something I did on my end?

Thanks again for all yourhard work! These coupled with ADM's fan edits of the prequels makes me a VERY happy Star Wars fan!!

What's the status on Jedi? Haven't seen an update for several weeks.

Btw, anyone know of plans to get these torrented?

Silly question Citizen, but I saw your Bladerunner split screen clip and I wondered how you built it. Did you use AviSynth to split the screen? If so could you share your script?

Not the most elegant way to achieve this, but it does the job, remember to alter the frame setting in the blankclip command for the length of video you're comparing, as well as the width/height/fps if you're working with NTSC:

blankclip(length=2981,width=720,height=576,fps=25,color=$000000)
clip1=avisource("before.avi").crop(0,0,360,576)
clip2=avisource("after.avi").crop(360,0,360,576)
overlay(clip1,mode="blend",opacity=1)
overlay(clip2,360,0,mode="blend",opacity=1)

Rikter, you are the man, been looking forward to this finally being torrented. I shall be excitedly checking my MySpleen RSS Feed all next week, oh yes Are you going to torrent the XviD's as well Rikter, the quality difference between MPEG2 and XviD made to fill a DVD is massive, I love those HQ XviD encodes! And getting the XviD is so the perfect way to watch the films since they are slowed down from the PAL source to 24fps so we get it in its most authentic form

And of course, props to Citizen, I take it from Rik's post that means the trilogy is complete? Can't wait to see these badboys.
