One thing that having Chewbacca in ROTS did help was the line in ROTJ where Jabba the Hutt says: "At last, the mighty Chewbacca." Also, when he meets Obi-Wan in ANH, he probably recognizes that Obi-Wan is a jedi, and is more willing to help him.
