Any GOOD memories of the PT?

Author
Time
I know we are pretty purist when it comes to the films and granted the PT is subpar compaired to, well, just about everything - esspecially Star Wars.

But I was thinking the other day. Do any of you have any great memories tied with the PT? I was there for all the excitement and the hype (and the painful let down) that the PT provided and I do have some wonderful memories associated with the films. Granted I don't much care for the movies, but I have been known to sit down and watch it if it is on (such as when my aunt watched Episode I over semester break). I don't like the movies, but it does bring up some great memories.

TPM - I was 14 years old and living in Japan. My 2 best friends and I were so psyched it was obsured. I was on a small American Base so the theater had one screen and we had to drive to the other base opposite the island to see it. I still have the Japanese Coke cans that had full color photos of the cast on them. I ate at Taco Bell so I could have the Anakin mug. All 3 of us bought the novel and each tried to get a different cover (I got obi-wan's). I had about 3 different posters and flipped out whenever I saw the "Duel of Fates" on MTV. I saw the movie twice in the theater and bought about 2 T-shirts when I was in Hawaii. I was so young and so hyped up, and even made a fan movie called "The Franchise Menace" where I played Obi-Wan and my other friends were Darth Maul and the Queen. We had some damn fine costumes.
Those were some good times. I may think the movie is lame, but it will always remind me when I knew how to have nerdy fan-girl fun.

AOTC - I was a senior in high school and quite fond of my then boyfriend. He was a sweet guy and it was my first real boyfriend I had ever had. Convienient the second Star Wars movie was a love story. It was the only film that didn't say the word "midichlorians" and once again, I was overseas and had to see the movie in a German theater. It was in English and it was the finest theater I have ever been in. Plush, clean, very "broadway" like. The germans do love their entertainment. Good times. And the Love Theme is still wonderful.

ROTS - this just came out, but I still have some great memories with it. I was just in my Junior year of college and taking summer classes to stay on top of things. It was the first time I had to take classes down town and boy was it hot. I can remember sitting in my film class for 3 hours in the afternoon watching old Bogart films thinking, "I think I'm gonna go see ROTS again when I'm done with class." I had the soundtrack in my car for who knows how long (John Williams is a music god). I can remember sitting at the bus stop waiting for my campus bus to come and bring me back home and thinking, "Sure that ROTS movie wasn't as good as I had hoped, but it had some cool qualities...aside from the NOOOOOO! part." It was summer, it was warm, I was in shorts and I had the soundtrack on my CD player while on the beach. The movie sucked, but the memories are great.

With these movies and I can see them and see myself growing up with them, even if I didn't have a choice. I can see myself from a little girl who had hope that these movies were going to be awesome and soaked up what I could, to a young girl experiancing romance for the first time, to eventually a studying film student sitting out in the sun thinking, "Well, I suppose it could have been worse. Not too shabby."

The films may have sucked, but their presence brings good memories to mind. How 'bout you?

I have grown up with the PT. It represents some of the fondest parts of my childhood. It inspired me, especially TPM. It was part of my life I'll never forget. It's similar to you guys with the OT, I suppose. Generally, I have fond memories associated with everything to do with the PT.

My experience pretty much mirrors that. I was 13 when TPM came out, and I was full of the excitement of getting to see a new Star Wars movie on the big screen for the first time, trying to mirror the experience of my forefathers who saw the original Star Wars for the first time. Even though I knew it wasn't going to be as good. I was 16 when AOTC came out, and I was very much in the throes of unrequitted love, so I ate up the love story then because I was just as sappy as Anakin. And, yeah, still 19. ROTS came out. I just finished my freshman year of college on top of the world, finally reunited with my girlfriend. Of course, I laughed at ROTS, but it was still... kinda poignant. And exciting.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I do have good memories of the Prequels, less so with TPM as I never saw it at the cinema, but with Clones i went with a couple of friends to see it, we had a few drinks before and a laugh, and then watched the film and kinda liked it, though we didnt think it was a special as the originals, and then went to the pub afterwards for a good few, as for Revenge of the Sith i took a day off work to see it with some friends on the very first day at an early showing, we really liked it, and again afterwards we made a day of it afterwards and then I went again some more times with different people and again tried to make a day of it as and treat it as occasion as it was probably the last time a new Star Wars film would hit the cinema.

Oh, you bet!

TPM - I must've been 11 back then. Of course, I really liked it. And Jar Jar was not just funny. He was "cool". I shudder today, but it was quite an experience back then. I remember that my door and walls were plastered with newspaper cut-outs about it. It was the new Star Wars movie, man! For a kid who'd been a hardcore OT fan since seeing most of ROTJ on TV (taped - it ran out just before Vader attacked Palpatine!), this was big news!

AOTC - Well, I thought it was decent. Mostly because of Jango Fett. The biggest memory I have is that the film broke just before Obi-Wan is caught on Geonosis. Total darkness and people laughing and screaming "Hello?". But it was nowhere near as big at TPM! By now, I had however realised the facts that TPM's humour was miserable and that Jar Jar was not cool, but a complete and utter idiot.

ROTS - Officially, I was sick, but my parents gave me an extra day home so I could round off the saga. This time, the movie surpassed my expectations. I thought it was absolutely fantastic apart from the minor problems. The Order 66-scene nearly made me cry (it's still surprisingly gut-wrenching for me to watch) and Vader's first breath was the moment I had been waiting for since the announcement of Episode I. It gave me the chills. At that time, the "NOOOOOOO!!!" was the least of my problems. Like the aforementioned masked man once said "The circle is now complete".

So overall, TPM probably means the most to me. But it pales in comparison to watching the SE on the big screen, or the Christmas back in '97 where I got the SE VHS box from my parents. The SE is one of the biggest part of my childhood. Yes, I'm a freak. But it was good times...
"The things that stick in my mind and make me laugh were, like, memos worried about whether or not the Wookie should have pants. They're looking at this thing and saying, "Couldn't he have some lederhosen?" This is great. Of all the things to worry about, the Wookie has no pants." -Mark Hamill

TPM: It was a 12:01AM performance and the theater was packed. The lights got dark, previews ran. The Star Wars logo and crawl appeared and a huge roar of applause and cheering started simply because it was Star Wars, and it had been 16 years since a Star Wars movie premiered in the theaters.

I didn't get to see TPM opening night (actually, I didn't see any of them opening night) because I was with my Outdoor-Ed class, and we were on a biking/climbing trip in Lake Placid, NY. So, there are 20 of us, plus our teacher and chaperones, and we decided that on our last night there, the Thursday (TPM having opened on the Wednesday) night we'd spend on the town. About half of us decided to go see a movie, and we were split between TPM and The Matrix. I went for TPM, and loved the start of the movie. Before long, though, three of us decided to "head to the can...." and snuck into The Matrix, which started a half hour later.

That's my memory of TPM, sneaking out.

I never saw AOTC in theatres. Or maybe I did. I don't really remember.

With ROTS, I went with some friends who really wanted to watch it. I think that's what made it the best PT cinema experience. The people.

No matter what we think of the movie, the biggest memory for me is going opening weekend with my older brother, and after it is all said and done, we saw all 6 together as kids and adults, and that will always be cool to me. That is the power of Star Wars, and I will give Lucas his due for that memory.

Seeing all three at 12:01 is my fave memory. My second fave memory is realizing that I could make them more enjoyable for myself by re-editing them. I never hated any of them, but my disappointment couldn't be denied. Now I just watch the re-edits and love every moment. I have this board to thank for that.

hey if the prequels inspired people like adamwan then as far im concerned they were worthwhile. i was underwhelmed by all the prequels, felt really let down by tpm espescially, but had high hopes for them getting better. but by the last 10 minutes of rots i thought the whole affair was so anti climatic that it really fueled my hatred for the prequels. i mean were they really neccessary? we had to go through bad dialogue, sub par cgi, lame jar jar antics, not to mention bad continuity just for that? in the end it was better the prequels and everyones origins remain a mystery. if i were a film critic i would have given them all 2 star ratings, and thats not good for star wars films. as tv movies movies fine, but theatrical movies, thats unacceptable

It's an entirely different experience, battlewars, when you watch TPM without any knowledge of Star Wars. It's enjoyable that way.

When TPM came out I was in my senior year on high school, dragged two other friends to see it. One of them hated it, the other liked it, I was in shock, SW was dead.

For AOTC, I was in college back then, I dragged two other friends, who complained all the time midnight was too late to see a movie. I kinda liked it better but was still unimpressed.

For ROTS I was able to bring 10 other people with me, co-workers, ex-co-workers and friends. They all hated it, but I thought it was the best prequel by far, which is to say it kinda sucked. I remember posting pictures of it here.

For me, the must fun of the whole PT era was not the films itself, but the hype, the rumors, waiting in line at midnight, all that stuff.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Umm there was the ten minutes when I went to the restroom and waited in line for some Junior Mints.
Yeah.
That's pretty much the extent of the good PT memories I have.

Fine, mister Lucas, while you're at it why dont you replace Lando with will smith?

Seeing TPM trailer for the first time is probably the best memory I have.

I was luck enough to tape it on video, so that got watched a few hundred times before the actual film was released!

All my memories are good
TPM: On holiday in the USA, after we came out we went to the massive supermarket and bought loads of toys for cheap (i was 8) I kept falling in the pool where we were staying so I could have maul plasters, good times. Did leave my mcdonalds toy in the theater though Jay and bluejay, where are you!

AotC: I went with my uncle and took my saber with me (I was 11) I argueed with my uncle that we were ment to see the clone wars and didnt (he said we did) I coverd my wall in posters and read all the comics, my mum said no to toys this time cos I was supossedly too old

RotS: May 19th, full Jedi garb, loads of people for once thought I was cool! (I was/am 14) Had a great time and saw it again 4 times (5 in total before I got the workprint) Posters, toys, CD, any magazine with it on the front, video taped all interveiws and adverts, went to the London premier and stood out side in the cold and rain for hours!

I loved the prequels, becuase I couldnt do it for the OT!

I hate it when parents try to tell you you're too old for something. (Hmm, I guess I'll end up writing this in the Things That We Hate thread) Damn societal pigeonhole rules. I'll do what I want, and idiots shouldn't be able to judge me. I just got back from a park where I was swinging on the swings fifteen minutes ago. Too old? Bah! Only when I can no longer stand will I be too old to play on a playground!

My wife thinks I'm going through a midlife crisis because i'm buying original star wars ships of e-bay. My love of Star Wars had to be subdued for a long while because i'd become to old for "that sort of thing". That was until the Lucas announced the Special Editions - thats when i let it all out and fell love Star Wars again.
I convinced myself the SE's were great, and each of the prequels were fantastic when i watched them on the big screen, just because they were Star Wars (even though deep down i knew they were really sh*te).
Even though, given time, and coming from down from that high, i still apreciate in order of the movies:

-The Pod Race (sorry - but i think its visually impressive, and for the audio - damn!).
-Darth Maul (initially i thought he was lame for a Star Wars bad guy, now i know he's the best on offer).
-Seeing how cool Slave 1 really is in action.
-The Death Star concept.
-The prototype 'Stormtroopers' (although the clone aspect is lame).
-The Clone vs. Robot battle was alright (better than droid vs. gungan anyhow).
-Prototype Star Destroyers in action.
-And my absolute love from ROTS the variation of clone commanders/troopers.

Anyhow I'm 31 and given the test of time everything now sucks ass!

BTW, instead of EBay you should head over to the Vintage Classified Sections in the Forum of Rebelscum.com, they'd probably offer you a better deal.
