The outstanding ones:
- Star Wars: A perfect space opera. It has everything I love about this franchise. Even if it had never gotten any sequels, I think it would still be one of my favorite movies today. Just an incredible film.
- The Empire Strikes Back: From a filmmaking perspective, it’s probably a better movie than the original. It might genuinely be one of the best movies ever made, and it was a defining moment for the series. It’s only second because, for me, nothing can beat the original.
The enjoyable ones:
3. The Force Awakens: It’s just pretty good. Yes, it’s basically a soft reboot of the original, but I like the characters, I like the lightsaber fight, and Ford is really good in this one.
4. Return of the Jedi: The black sheep of the original trilogy for me, at least. I don’t like Leia being Luke’s twin sister, I don’t like the second Death Star, and Han Solo is basically useless and pretty boring throughout the movie. But the final third is really good, and that saves a lot of it for me.
The mixed bag:
5. The Last Jedi: Some really good ideas and some really bad ones. Everything with Luke, Rey and Ben is great. I love the Yoda scene, and… honestly, that’s about it. The humor really isn’t my cup of tea, and I still think the movie should have ended with Rey possibly joining Ben and the two of them starting something new. It felt like a huge missed opportunity to take Star Wars somewhere genuinely interesting.
6. Solo: Unnecessary and kind of boring, but at least it’s inoffensive. I honestly don’t remember that much about it, which probably says enough.
7. Rogue One: Yeah, I know a lot of people love this movie. I don’t. I think they could have done something really interesting with the premise, but instead it mostly feels like a movie about a bunch of people going somewhere to steal something. There’s not much clever about it, I find the characters boring, and there’s way too much fan service for me.
8. The Phantom Menace: I don’t like the prequels, and this movie is pretty awful in almost every way. But for some reason, it still feels like Star Wars to me. I can’t really say the same about the other two prequels.
Nah, I never want to rewatch these:
9. The Rise of Skywalker: It has basically everything I don’t like about Star Wars. Unnecessary family connections, dumb ideas, a stupid plot… I think my soul left my body in the theater when Palpatine started shooting Force lightning into the sky.
10. Revenge of the Sith: A lot of people say it’s the best of the prequels, but I don’t know. It just never really felt like Star Wars to me. It feels more like a war movie filled with characters I don’t care about.
11. Attack of the Clones: It’s just insufferable.
