I wonder if the rendering error where Deluded Buzz’s utility belt disappears for one shot inside the apartment vents (as seen on the 2000/2005 widescreen DVD, 2010 Blu-Ray and 2019 4K UHD releases) was present on the original 35mm film prints, or did they fix that in the fullscreen DVD/3D re-renders?

I did check the fullscreen DVD at one point, and it’s gone. I’m working on remaking the original master project file since the re-renders really suck, and I just want to make it visually lossless as possible, so I’ll double check check master to see if it’s fixed. Given Toy Story 2’s rushed production because of Disney’s refusal to delay the release, I think errors like this make sense. I do remember seeing a floating rock peeking on the left of the green explosion as Buzz lands to safety. So far, it’s on the Blu-ray and I haven’t checked other masters yet. I honestly wonder if this Blu-ray master is the 5th re-render of the film. If you aren’t aware, there was another re-render of TS2 made sometime in 2007 for HDTV airings. I actually happen to have fond memories of this master, probably saw this master for the first time on Disney Cinemagic HD, and it is very bizarre to see the picture zoomed in, the “Walt Disney” text popping in due to the flash being semi-transparent, and seeing the original American version for the first time, since I do remember seeing the first two films for the first time when I was a baby through the UK UTB DVDs. ValenStudios did send me links to what he found of those rips, and it is really cool to see them. So the three rips he sent me are, the CBC HD broadcast, with heavily compressed 5.1 audio of the 2005 DVD mix with the outtakes, very rare instance, one where it is cropped to 1.85:1, and the credits are way different, where it plays the last outtake, then Barbie’s farewell, then plays the condensed credits, though the audio is the DTS audio from the 2005 R1 DVD, so the credits audio keeps playing, even if the video finished, and one ABC rip, which cuts the Disney logo, shows some of the outtakes, then plays the split-screen credits if I remember. I think I recall the HDTV master is the same one that was featured in The Pixar Story documentary, which is why I came to the conclusion that the Hulu print might’ve been made sometime in 2007, maybe around the time Hulu starts supporting 1080p video, and is still used to this day without Disney knowing.

Oh yeah, I remember that HDTV version where it had the “Walt Disney” text popping in error. I saw it air on BBC One a few years ago, back when Toy Story 4 came out in theaters. Not only did the opening variants for both the original Disney and Pixar logos have a heavy pinkish tint, but they were also strangely cropped and stretched to 1.85:1, which looked like an edit of the variants from A Bug’s Life when compared to the widescreen 2000/2005 DVD master (the closing variants didn’t have those problems). IIRC, the late-2000s BBC master also used the American flag version and even the full uncensored outtake credits, which was ironic considering the timing of that airing. Haha

I wouldn’t be surprised if this Disney Cinemagic/BBC HDTV master for Toy Story 2 was a similar situation to Toy Story 1 on Hulu, where the HD/4K remasters were completed sometime in 2006-2008 for their Blu-Ray releases, before they altered the logos and credits after the theatrical 3D re-releases.

Speaking of British TV airings, last month, Channel 4 aired the first two films and this where I got the chance to extract the Teletext subtitles from the site before it was removed. And very interestingly, they used the 2019 American Blu-ray masters (yes, even with the national anthem on it), so I had to delay the subtitles since the infamous removed outtake wasn’t included in their airing. Funny story is that I learnt it from my Nan’s TV guides since one day when we were out for a Sunday roast, I scanned through the guides only to see Toy Story on Channel 4’s, and I knew this got me into action, since I already know it is easy to extract the Teletext subs from the “.vtt” file from the “Inspect element” feature I can use a long time ago, back when The Simpsons Movie was on their site.

Teletext subtitles I can recall are impossible to extract to a compatible subtitle format like .ssa or .srt on an analog source such as UK TV broadcasts, UK and German VHS releases, etc, since it’s usually on a live page that you can’t rip every single live moment, though digital Teletext is the only easy way I can get a chance to rip, since this is what I did for the SPS subtitles from a raw .ts rip of a Movistar Disney airing of The Nightmare Before Christmas. In fact, many UK streaming services mostly have their subtitles be based from the Teletext subtitles from their respective airings.

Speaking of .ts, I do remember seeing a torrent of a raw rip of a BBC One airing of TS4, originally from the Internet Archive, since I do see the meta files for the site in the torrent, though of course it was taken down. I think it would be really cool if anyone still had those old DVRs that still has the first two films from their pre-2010 masters to rip them so I can use it, mostly for Teletext/DVBSUB subtitles and audio description. I do still have a Movistar Spain airing of the first film through eMule I can properly extract the SPS subtitles since many attempts causing syncing problems, even if I almost get it right. Like what UntitledJunk said, the BBC does still have the 2007 HDTV master, so maybe someone out there might’ve recorded it and found a way to rip it to their hard drive.

So, I found this quote from the Digital cinema Wikipedia page.

In Europe, on February 2, 2000, Texas Instruments’ DLP Cinema projector technology was publicly demonstrated, by Philippe Binant, on one screen in Paris for the release of Toy Story 2.

That interests me, because I thought Monsters Inc. was actually their first, given that the DVD and Blu-rays have the film presented in it’s original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, meaning that unlike Toy Story 2 where they re-rendered it for digital mastering on the DVD, Monsters Inc. went with using their original digital 2K source into DVD. I think it could probably be because of the trailers, since they are digitally mastered, so I have no idea why Toy Story 2 got another widescreen render for the DVD.

So, I forgot about the pre-release clips from my Cars UK promotional DVD containing workprint audio, even originally on Disney UK’s YT channel before it was removed. I think the reason why they did a second render is because they originally rendered it in 1.66:1 like in the first movie. Here are the clips I have in question.

Another glitch on the 2D BD, if it hasn’t been noted yet. In the scene where Jessie turns off the TV, Woody’s hat is missing from the reflection for a few frames, unlike on the 3D BD and the fullscreen DVD.

I checked the cam rip, and it’s the same as the 2D BD. Maybe there was intentionally a “disable in render” toggle added where Woody was not supposed to appear until his animation play. This is probably why we don’t see his head move.

I never would have considered there would be different soundtracks for releases in different countries, so that was something fun to learn.

The project looks great, and thanks for all the hard work on a movie that deserves all the love and attention it gets!

So, I’ve managed to grab the 2010 Turkish VCDs of the first three films, even though originally I thought they’re just going to use the rare P&S versions of the Blu-ray masters (probably because I thought I saw a YouTube video of a recreation using a Blu-ray master), until I saw this image in the eBay listing

(yes that is the 1996 master!)

so I bought them because why not, especially since I know it would have Dolby Surround downmixes of the original Turkish dubs. In fact, they’re re-prints of the 2002 releases since they have trailers to Atlantis, Dinosaur and Monsters Inc on the first two and especially since I learnt it from the date of the disc files.

Also, check about the telecined Turkish localised shots of TS2 (including the logos bizarrely). I can tell Pixar doesn’t feel like doing localised Turkish shots for the fullscreen version, since they already did for the Cantonese dub. Either way, it looks cool!

And yes, the credits do look like what it was on the old HDTV and Blu-ray.

Also, seeing the Walt Disney Records logo peeking on the last credit really proves how TS2 was in fact originally mastered on film to begin with, meaning that this was not supposed to be seen when screened in cinemas.

So, is the 35mm footage in the Turkish master a dye transfer Technicolor print or an Eastman?

Not an expert on film stock, so I dunno.

I’ve just released v1.0.1. The only difference is that the UK VHS audio is replaced with the Japanese subtitled VHS audio. Anyone who has the link to my repository should have the updated one by now.

What is the difference between the British VHS audio and the one from the Japanese subtitled VHS?

It’s pretty much the same as the international version, except the condition of the sealed copy is much better than the UK tape, resulting in less artifacts and it is in NTSC, meaning it should have better quality in the sampling.

I love the work you’ve done here. Watched both 1 and 2 again before seeing the new one and it brought me back to watching them as a kid, I never liked the logo-plastering on the blu-rays at all.

Are you considering doing Monsters Inc. as well? Mainly to have a version of the film in HD widescreen with the blooper reel at the end, but I understand if not.

To be fair, there’s also Finding Nemo which already has BBC HD 1080i rips floating around the net before the Blu-ray since 2006. Though Monsters Inc. does have a close theatrical look on its first Blu-ray, and there’s already a fanmade edit that does recreate the theatrical version, while also restoring the original pre-9/11 explosion that they fully rendered before they changed it before release to pay respect (and yes this edit does have the outtakes on it). The HDTV master has it cropped to 1.85;1 like in Monsters Inc, though I can guess this is what the movie was originally mastered, since clips of it from the trailers and from the Fishy Fun Fact on Bruce from the bonus discs for both Nemo of the 2003 re-release of A Bug’s Life do show it in 1.85:1 letterboxed. before they re-rendered it to 1.78:1 for the Blu-ray the same time they did the 3D version.

Actually, there’s two that I know. The BBC HD one is the first I know because of the time compression to the credits, and you can see the BBC HD identical fading in on the last frame, and one where it does keep the original credits, though strangely the Disney logo fading in, likely so that the user who made the rip sync it with the PAL DVDs. Dunno if it was the Italian, Polish or Greek ones. I think the BBC HD one is cropped to 1.78:1, while the second does preserve the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio.

So aside from the Atmos changes and the blooper credits edit, what exactly was changed visually on the 4K master when compared to the original theatrical release?

I recall it was the snowcones. Dunno if this is done since the 2009 BD or the 2012 one, since I recall the 2012 BD is based on the 3D version.

Oh I know about the Monsters Inc changes already with the snow cones (I saw an international master with the OG Disney logo but still had the altered snow cones).

I was actually asking about visual changes to Toy Story 1 and 2 on the initial BD releases outside of what I mentioned already.

Well, the BD is much the same as the DVD, except there was a frame error during You’ve Got a Friend in Me that wasn’t on the DVD masters. I don’t think I see any differences between the DVDs and BD of TS2 though.

So, I just recently found the Latin American bootleg, and it does have the original end credits with the dubbed songs, and it does make me think I need to know if anyone has the 2005 Latin American DVD, since that’s the only way I think should preserve the 5.1 audio of the original Latin American end credits, despite the fact that it has been remixed to use the American audio. It’s also just to make sure that the music in the end credits doesn’t get remixed like in the original 2005 English DVD audio.

So, I released a new update to 24.11.99 International using the Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese dubs from the 2005 Latin American DVD (thanks to ValenStudios) for the credits. These along with the Canadian French dubs are the only dubs I know that dubbed the original theatrical closing credits, since I believe that because the film would be released in other countries with only the outtakes such as the UK, I believe that some dubs such as Taiwanese Mandarin, Korean and Italian might have the credits dubbed from their theatrical releases, while other countries that don’t use the original English songs on the 2005 DVDs such as the European French and Japanese dubs. Hopefully anyone who has the foreign 2005 DVDs might check to see if the original theatrical credits have been dubbed to different languages or keep the original and let me know.

Here are the international release dates for this movie pre-December 25.

South Korea: December 2nd, 1999
Taiwan: December 2nd, 1999
Thailand: December 10th, 1999
Hungary: December 13th, 1999
Mexico: December 17th, 1999
Brazil: December 17th, 1999

There are foreign dubs produced around early-2000 that have the pre-December 25th credits substituted for the bloopers on the 2005 DVD release.

Also, Toy Story 2 was released on February 2000 in Italy and obviously, it uses the Blooper credits.

Ah, thanks. Hopefully I need confirmation from anyone who obtains the 2005 DVDs that contain those dubs in these selected counties.

They do have their songs dubbed, so I dunno if the 2005 Korean DVD if it exists does have the songs dubbed.

I finally got access to the Cinema DTS files of the film! So because of it, I decided to release v1.1. Because there doesn’t exist a duplicate of reel 2 featuring the One World Anthem, it is patched using the UK BD. I’m no longer including the theatrical reconstruction audio since the Cinema DTS audio doesn’t have any clipping unlike the BD audio.
