How would you handle a hard reboot of all nine episodes of Star Wars? — Page 2

For the remakes of the original trilogy they would be directed by Zack Snyder and feel like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9X_FmCbrIA

All of the characters would be played by George Lucas, except Mark Hamill is Darth Vader and Ewan McGregor plays Ben Kenobi.

All the characters are CGI, including the humans. In fact, the entire movie is CGI. Even George Lucas is CGI.

It would use the original drafts with none of the rewrites. This needs to be George’s unembellished vision before people started reining him in. Well, except for whatever Zack Snyder offers to the table.

The prequels would be three hour experimental films just like the movies George Lucas wanted to make before Star Wars became successful. All completely visual, no actors or dialogue. Basically make them a Star Wars version of Stan Brakhage movies or Koyaanisqatsi.

And then the remake of the sequel trilogy is basically just shot for shot remakes of the other movies, like Gus Van Sant’s Psycho remake. Maybe have Vince Vaughn appear in them as Darth Vader, why not?

For anybody out there who didn’t realize this was a joke, please do not actually do this, I beg you.

All his life has he looked away… to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph!

I wouldn’t worry about the Sequel Trilogy because it doesn’t really tie to OT anyway, nor have a consistent story worth rebooting.

But what I would like to see is Episodes 4-6 made as a continuation of the Prequels.

I don’t consider the prequels to be set in the same continuity as the OT anyway, so I feel like the Episodes 4-6 don’t exist for these prequel characters anyway.

And Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen have already shown they’d be up for, and suitable, to play their parts again, so why not…

I would make the reboot similar to Tolkien’s three ages of Middle Earth.

The first trilogy would focus on the “ancient times”
The second would show the downfall of the Republic and rise of the Empire.
The third would be a clone of the original trilogy, showing the defeat of the Empire and return of peace to the galaxy.

Why doesn’t Lucasfilm create a new IP. Where is all the creativity.

George could create Star Wars, and Indiana Jones and Willow. So Lucasfilm without a young Lucas can’t create anything, is what the last ten years have told us. All they can do is recycle old worn-out IP.

Even his more wacky and ill considered ideas like making Howard the Duck was taking a risk. Something Disney Lucasfilm would never do. That was mere poor adaptation, the comic is completely different more political and less Disney.

It’s also the weird kind of comic parody and social commentary that does not work in a live action film.

I refuse to dehumanize anyone. Your ethical/moral/political/religious views may be repugnant to me, but I strive to hold Luke 23:34 close to my heart.

If they can’t make gold standard movies like Star Wars and Indiana Jones work why bother.

i guess it depends on how its made whats the reboot storylines and whos in the cast

earth 1 nowadays kinda reminds me of the star wars multiverse

I would have Darth Vader say “No, Luke, I am your father.”

So here’s the situation: Lucasfilm has reached to you after being thoroughly impressed by the career film directing you definitely had. Their request? Remake all nine episodes of Star Wars.

Now of course that sounds insane. Blasphemy, surely! And yeah, to an extent, remakes would be redundant. The films have problems, but remaking them might be overkill…or would it be? You decide.

Anyway, you have to chance to take films made by three vastly different teams with different levels of technology where the only consistent part of the story is how much they’re making up as they go along. Thus, a version that’s all planned from the start could look very different.

I’m sure Palpatine wouldn’t appear to be killed in RotJ, and we’d probably only have one Death Star. The OT as a whole would obviously look much more modern. The aesthetic of the Galaxy would probably more consistent, with each trilogy seeming equally different as opposed to the ST being a spitshined OT while the PT does its own thing. Of course, I’d cut Leia being Luke’s sister, but I realize that’s a hot take. Cutting Rey being Palpatine, though, is not.

My reaction: this would be the worse creative decision in the history of filmmaking

Probably, but it’s a neat thought experiment or writing prompt for something along the lines of prequel rewrites from back in the day.

No worse than having a gajillion Dracula and Frankenstein movies.

there are most likely a dozen of alternate earths in the multiverse where there are reboots of the star wars original trilogy and prequel trilogy

Such an interesting question! I think Star Wars '77 is basically sacred ground, and recreating the magic of that film would be impossible at so many levels (this of course extends to the rest of the saga to varying degrees).

I’d seek to do what Denis Villeneuve has done with Dune. I’m a huge Dune fan, and I really love how Denis has created an kind of ‘alternate Dune’ that deviates significantly from the books (which are sacred a la Star Wars '77) but still absolutely captures the themes and story in a way that honours the original (at least in my opinion).

For example the next Dune film will be an adaptation of the book ‘Dune Messiah’, but as fans we still have very little idea on how this film is going to go. We know the basics - we’ve read the book - but Denis has deviated so far from the text that it’s mostly speculation at this point.

So I think a Star Wars reboot should do the same - have the basic themes of adventure and heroism and family and The Force and the overall story in a broad sense, but create an unpredictable ‘alternate’ version rather than just have better effects and fan-service-driven repetition.

Bit of a nothing answer in terms of detail but you get my drift…
