The film Dracula (2026) is my new favorite adaptation of the story. A romantic tragedy that spans centuries and brings with it newfound understanding. A phenomenal production well worthy of the title Dracula. A must see if there ever was one!

Star Wars has 3 eras: The eras are 1977-1983(pre Expanded Universe), (1983-2014) expanded universe, or (2014- now) Disney-bought version. Each are valid.

The 2026 Oscar Nominated Animated Shorts were astounding and completely perfect in every single way. Some were comedic others were dramatic, but all were meaningful! A must see!

I finally got around to watching Alien 3 :The Legacy Cut. It’s the best fan edit I have seen yet. It fixes most of the issues with the rod puppet used for full body shots of the creature. It also takes the best of the theatrical and assembly cut. Upscaled to 4K, it has extensive colour correction and some music and sound effect replacement. I think if this version was the one that hit the cinemas it may have been better received. I always thought it was underated.

The 2026 Documentaries are a hard watch. Do not watch unless you have either a strong stomach or a box of tissues.

I finally got around to seeing The Red House (1947). If you scratch the veneer of post war small town melodrama you find something protoLynchian and sophisticated. Even the soundtrack that starts off sounding like stock forties chirpy domestic drama music begins to drift into the electronic screams of the theremin. The woods feel like primordial deities casually observing heartache and violence for diversion. It’s a weird little thing.

I finally got around to seeing Retroactive (1997). Utterly bonkers film. Kylie Travis plays a failed police psychologist who thanks to some sci-fi shenanigans experiences Groundhog Day style repeating time loops. James Belushi plays a swaggering asshole. If you like films with handguns with infinite ammo that nobody can aim this is it.

I must say Bingo sounds like a weird movie, I’ll have to check it out.

I finally got around to seeing “Experiment in Terror” (1962). A very interesting Neo-noir film directed by Blake Edwards, later more famous for comedy, particularly the Pink Panther that shares its score composer in Henry Mancini. Stop me if it sounds familiar but it stars Lee Remick as “a woman in trouble” from a man called Lynch seeking help from the FBI. She lives in Twin Peaks (San Francisco). At times the Mancini score employs strummed bass and jazz notes similar to Badalamenti. There are some very Lynchian moments and moods too. I knew nothing about the film until I saw it but I do wonder if like Laura (1944) if it was influential on David Lynch’s work.

It is a vibe. Weird beyond the sci fi aspects. Absurd in some ways but unlike many modern films you are constantly aware of the experience.

I finally got around to seeing Liquid Sky (1982). Where to begin? Sexual violence, every kind of drug taking, new wave androgens, Chinese food, orgasm fuelled extraterrestrial spacecraft, necrophelia and yet somehow so tedious I don’t know how I got through it or why. Some beautiful shots of the New York Skyline and weird psychedelic infrared imagery. And a thrashing Fairlight soundtrack. It was an experience. Not one I care to repeat. I can’t accuse it of being generic though.

I watched A House of Dynamite this week. It starts out really really well. It’s a superb thriller, until you release that the first third is basically repeated, not just once but twice. And it lacks a real ending. Which is a real shame, because I think it could have become a classic if they had carried on as competently as they started.

Long time lurker, not an active writer. Forgive me. Recently, I’ve watched 2 entirely different movies: (1) “Another Round” w/ Mads Mikkelsen and (2) War Machine (2026)…

  1. Another Round: As someone who used to drink heavily socially, but became (and am) sober, I was curious about the premise - people who drink only to the point of 0.05 intoxication. As one might assume, since it’s a MOVIE/drama, things spiral out of control. I won’t spoil anything other than to say it was an interesting commentary on drinking in society. From my own personal perspective, I agree with a lot of the character’s actions and “rationales,” however flawed they be. Because of their actions is why I have decided to remain sober!

  2. War Machine (2026): Wow. Intense and gripping. I can totally imagine the 10 second pitch to Netflix exec’s: “Imagine!.. If Spielberg’s ‘War of the Worlds’ and Schwarzenegger’s ‘Predator’ had a baby!” This would totally explain the plot premise of Alan Ritchson’s starring take in “War Machine.” While Ritchson’s character is NO Schwarzenegger/“Dutch” from “Predator,” the mash-up premise - IMHO - remains: a group of soldiers (in this movie, not the most elite, but close) are dropped in the middle of the (American) wilderness and face off against a formidable and seemingly invincible alien force. This alien - which we never physically see themselves - force, in the form of giant walking machines, instantly vaporize humans (where the “WotW” part comes in).
Now, this is no Neil DeGrasse Tyson-approved-alien-intelligence (an alien force from literal light years away would have the intelligence to wipe out the planet in a methodical, swift manner), so, if you come in expecting aliens from Denis Villeneuve’s, you will be sorely disappointed. But if you’re seeking something that is more akin to the aforementioned films, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Thoughts?

There is no spoon.

The film Project Hail Mary is a fantastic movie! There’s comedy, Sci Fi, heart and stunning visuals! I highly highly recommend it! One of the best movies of 2026 so far!

Ryan Gosling in space again - hopefully this movie is more impressive than First Man was. Plus, the magic of friendship! 😛

I will make sure to check it out as soon as it is playing in home theaters!

The Abyss (1989) - Lesser known James Cameron movie that checks all the boxes. Who knew you could combine Titanic and Aliens and end up with a great movie?!? If you ever wondered where those lights in the sky come from, this should clear things up.

As a teenager I once walked 64km in the name of failed romance. I wasn’t properly dressed for such an undertaking. When I reached my destination I hung around for a bit and stumbled in a cinema showing The Adyss. It’s a very blue movie, colour palette wise and I suddenly realised I was suffering from the early stages of exposure as my teeth were chattering quite loudly during the film. I sold an item of jewellery and got the train home after very nearly making a fool of myself confessing my doomed affection. That’s the power of love.

Impressive! If I had a movie for everytime I did or nearly made a fool of myself in the name of love, I probably would have been a film critic. Someone in your story is probably a great screenplay waiting to be written.

Just saw The Terminator (on 4k UHD) with my youngest son (he’s 16). He actually really liked it despite the fact that some of the effects haven’t really aged so well. I thought it was a really good 4K-transfer (miles better than the abysmal restoration of the sequel…).

Just re-watched Chain Reaction for the N-th time, really love this film. Unlike a lot of 90’s films which suffer from over-the-top cheesy bad-guy trope, this one doesn’t and has a cool plot, fun cast, and is a simple great popcorn flick.

Marty Supreme (2025)

Just saw Marty Supreme on the big screen and it’s for sure one of the best of the year so far. Kinda sad that the release schedule was so behind where I live and it felt like everyone else got to saw it before me but damn that does not in any way take away from the insane quality of this film…wow…

Masters of the Universe 1987. I swear it gets worse the more times I go back and watch it. Why did I like it in any aspect in 1987.

I guess I like Bill Conti’s score and Frank Langella as Skeletor. Other than in looks Dolph is bad. Like a discount Arnold. I guess it’s fun seeing Courtney Cox and Robbie McNiell in the film.

The film being set on Earth instead of Eternia is a huge mistake.

Not having Prince Adam transform into He-man or Cringer into Battle Cat is bad too.

Good Journey.

Golan Globus/ Cannon films.

I’m sure the next time I watch Superman the Quest for Peace I won’t think much of it either.

It’s funny when I think of it because Cannon cheese, including their action films was a staple of my childhood. Chuck Norris and Charles Bronson. And the Ninja movies they made including American Ninja and Enter the Ninja. Firewalker, Missing in Action, dare I say it Death Wish sequels. My dad liked these movies. Even he admitted Over the Top was bad, the arm-wrestling movie where Stallone gets a superpower putting his hat on backwards.

Langella and Meg Foster are the only two aspects working in the film’s favour. Langella in particular put far more effort into his performance than the character or story warranted. I love that one moment where Skeletor shudders while He-Man’s being whipped; it’s a small but profound touch hinting at there being more to Skeletor than mwuhahaha bad guy.

I refuse to dehumanize anyone. Your ethical/moral/political/religious views may be repugnant to me, but I strive to hold Luke 23:34 close to my heart.
