Actually, I think my idea makes more cliche and more obvious. The reason I suggested it is because it makes what he says make more sense if the two lines were reversed.

I mean look at it, he says, "I'm not in it for this, and I'm not in it for that. I expect this, I'm in for that."

Now let's reverse them:

"I'm not it for this, and I'm not it for that. I'm in it for that...and I expect this."

I think it sounds a lot better, and is definetely more obvious than the first one. The original one to me feels like a mistake.
