Wouldn’t spirited away and Howl’s be 2k Masters anyway?
Some of the films are getting 4K releases in Imax but not on disc.
Gkids has done My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service.
The 4K I have no idea if they are directly from the negative or a 2k upscale.
As for 35mm none such exist as far as I know.
So far the Japanese blu-rays are the best in terms of visuals and those who care about English Dubs in the US the gkids are the best for those.
The difference is so negligible between the US releases and the Japanese that most won’t notice.
I just afraid that any official 4K UHD disc is going to have more DNR and less detail than the blu-ray.
I’m really excited to see what Kiki will look like when it comes out on disc, if at all. I think I’ll see it in Imax here soon. But I don’t think there’s much information coming out about what they’re doing with some of their other fantastic films.
The announced Whisper of the Heart. Secret World of Arrietty. For Imax.
Didn’t NTV in Japan take over Ghibli with majority ownership. That is a corporate takeover I don’t know if we regret in some years or not.
I hope it means the studio continues and returns to its roots and we get 4K restorations of all the films.
Princess Mononoke looked incredible in 4k - I’d be shocked if they didn’t do a physical release at some point.
Good luck trying to find a print of Warriors of The Wind (The US reedit of Nausicaa)
Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were only a few prints of that back in the day that were all destroyed.
Though the existence of a foreign print I would not be surprised by.
There is a good blu-ray of Nausicaa if one wants Warriors of the Wind it’s on VHS.
I’d rather a 35mm print of Lensman surfaced, or the 35mm cut of Final Yamato which is lost. Or if the negatives could be located for Gall Force Eternal Story, Rhea Gall Force, Gall force Destruction. Gall force Stardust War.
Or even the missing Negative for episode 16 of Evangelion in 16mm. None of those are Ghibli but they are anime.

I’d be surprised too. That’s a missed opportunity to make money
I believe GKIDS are not allowed to make home releases until after Japan gets them.
4K IMAX does not necessarily mean 4K UHD is on the way. Boy and the Heron is a different story, it was a new film and released nearly at the same time in North America and Japan. Though not the UK they had to wait until September 23 of 2024, I think.
I think Japan was something like July the 3rd and US was July 9th of 2024. Boy and the Heron on 4K.
For anime that is not at all typical.
I think there was a gap between when Japan first had their Ghibli blu-ray and Disney started releasing theirs, years ago before GKIDS took over the us video rights.
Nausicaa was several months delayed in the United States from the Japanese release. 2010, to 2011.

I’m just praying they release all of them as 4k restorations at some point. Ghibli animation is simply unmatched in terms of quality and storytelling. Getting any sort of Criterion Collection release/restauration of their projects would also be sick but it’s not looking likely.
In the US at least Ghibli is Gkids. I think Shout Factory is involved somehow or another. On the physical media side of things.
Whoever currently does the US license on physical would do 4k UHD discs. Whoever does the releases in Japan would do them and in other territories I assume that would deal with licensing.
UK Ghibli rights lost to Studio Canal in 2022. It’s now Elysian. Must be quite something to have had everything Optimum releasing and Studio Canal on DVD and Blu-Ray to have Elysian take over the rights to Boy and the Heron and any future re-release of Ghibli.
my neighbor totoro and princess mononoke have 2k DCPS that can be found quite easly on public torrent sites
(Not that I condone that ofc)
