I wonder if they’re gonna release just Episode IV in theaters. I’m thinking because this is such a massive milestone for Star Wars (50th Anniversary) that they’re gonna decide to release all 3 original films in theaters, because when leaked restoration clips surfaced, they were for all 3 films. Also, does anyone think they’re gonna release the theatrical versions on Disney+?

Most have theorized with the re-release being pushed from April to February is that Disney might reveal at a later point that they’re also re-releasing Empire in March and Jedi in April, akin to how Fox released the Special Editions over a monthly period. Another (more realistic) theory is that they pushed it back simply to give the release of Starfighter some leg room. And even if the latter were the case, there’s definitely a physical (and maybe streaming) release at hand.

I hope we get an official 4K Bluray release of the original release! Ik there’s already the fan projects here but it would be so nice to own them. Looking from the screenshots, they look WAY better than the ugly 4Ks we have.

Don’t see any reason we wouldn’t get a UHD release when the leaks have suggested things like HDR pipelines, restorations of the mono, stereo and 6-track mixes (plus new 7.1 mixes at that), and a documentary of the restoration.

Disney does strange things that don’t make sense, for all the things they do to make shareholders money and to try to make a for profit entity out of Star Wars.

The way they treat physical media as a corporation not just Lucasfilm, is literary throwing away money in pursuit of a streaming model, I certainly don’t want or support.

Look at the 20th Century Fox film and television catalogue, the catalogue for disney animated,Touchtone pictures.

People clamor for DMC titles to be affordable and back in print on blu-ray, for several movies to be on 4K and they don’t care.

The overhead cost is too much so they gave everything over to Sony who does almost nothing.

and a documentary of the restoration.

If they make a documentary about ALI’s step-by-step restoration of OUT, I’ll die, and I’d be even more surprised if they said something like, “We leaked our restoration to generate buzz.” Can you imagine? I’d have a heart attack. Instead of just releasing OUT like it’s nothing, the documentary could talk about how only various cuts of the saga have been seen, except for the original, the one that won 7 Oscars. I would love it!!!

I’m a huge Disney fan (out of state WDW annual passholder) and a huge Star Wars fan (obviously…lol). I can admit that the Disney Star Wars era has been hit & miss. There are things I like (i.e. Andor, Rouge One, Mandalorian, Force Awakens) and things I don’t like (Solo, Book of Boba Fett, Rise of Skywalker). I have to think Disney knows what the fans want from this and won’t mess it up. I’d be surprised if they do.

I too think this would be amazing. While the 4K projects are great, I haven’t watched them due to concerns over the legality of them. Also, I think if Disney released 4K Blu-Rays, they would have HDR, and be of a higher quality (if they scanned from negatives of the films)

I don’t think legality’s an issue as long as you own official copies of the films, it’s perfectly in your right to obtain and watch those versions if you want.

Thanks to CaptainSolo’s channel (mentioned earlier in this thread) I obtained the relatively recent Arrow release of Conan the Barbarian '82 (my other favourite movie). I write this here to a) thank the good Captain if he happens to be lurking here and b) to illustrate just what a good Star Wars 4K/BluRay would look like. Conan has suffered the same indignities as Star Wars, albeit in a less extreme way, in terms of alterations and availability. This release has all three versions intact - a theatrical cut, a director’s cut, and an extended (Special Edition if you will) cut - plus a ton of extras which include past documentaries from previous releases. Oh, and the original theatrical poster art on the case!

This is all we need for Star Wars. Hopefully that’s where we’re headed…

For what it’s worth, this is incorrect. There’s basically no version of this that isn’t piracy according to copyright law. The law is dumb as rocks in this case, but that’s what it is. Even if you own a copy of the thing you’re pirating, it’s still pirating. Your prior purchase of the thing bears no weight on the action in question.

That said: It’s beyond clear by now, over 20 years since some version of this has been happening, that Lucasfilm is completely uninterested in going after (or even warning) anyone who is downloading 4K77/80/83 (or Harmy, or any of the LD bootlegs, etc).

Yes - it’s technically illegal, always has been, (as are every single fanedit ever made & distributed here and elsewhere) but nobody involved with Lucasfilm is concerned with pursuing anyone engaging in this.

If Star Wars was being handled by Arrow I could see this as a highly probably scenario. But Disney will be handling the release so I’d be amazed if we even get more than a quarter of what Arrow would do.

How do we know this exactly? Disney is handling the theatrical distribution of Star Wars (1977) but has there actually been definitive confirmation that Disney would or wouldn’t be handling any theoretical home video release? Considering they don’t even handle their own home video distribution anymore (Sony does now), I could almost see Disney licensing these out to Criterion or Arrow. With all of the effort that seems to be going into this and a seemingly clear aim to please longtime fans, I cannot imagine Disney/Lucasfilm allowing this to just be dumped out on disc with little to no thought put into it. Not to mention, if these were a boutique release, they wouldn’t necessarily impede on the availability of the currently circulating releases, which are still no doubt the versions that Lucas would want to be the most widely available.

The home video landscape is much different than it was 10, 15 or even 5 years ago. Most of the big studios have little to no interest in physical media anymore. For a big, important release like this, they would usually license it out to a boutique label whom they know would treat the property with care and respect. Do we know for certain that Aurora Light Imageworks IS Disney?

According to SW dot com and some fan sites,

the 4K restored re-release will launch on Feb 19th 2027 in theaters (and hopefully blu-ray and streaming)?

So the leak that came a few months ago was real, I take it. This has probably been discussed extensively on this forum already, but I’m new here.

I’m really looking forward to this. I’m a bit of a visuals snob, with an allergy towards terrible upscales and DNR and the like. I’m actually holding off on a re-watch of the original SW trilogy until 2027 because I want to experience it in top notch quality on my next watch. 😃)

Do we have any idea about restorations of ESB and ROTJ? I hope we don’t have to wait until 2030 and 2033 for those movies…

They’re obviously happening based on the leaks, but nothing beyond SW’s re-release next February has been officially announced yet.

The leaks were, from memory reading here a few months ago, unfortunately real. I say “unfortunately” because: can you imagine the implications to the people who had this happen to them? This was meant to be ultra-secretive and maybe (probably?) even included some strict NDA’s. I remember reading on here someone posited that BECAUSE of the leak, there was fear in the community that Lucasfilm would, therefore, terminate the project…or, basically, would have negative repercussions - aside from the firings/black listing from the people who worked on this.

I think it’s “cool” that the leaks were real (in a sense) because we FINALLLLLLLLLLLY got confirmation this was all happening (FINALLY): the real 35mm scans of the ORIGINAL “Star Wars,” in mint condition (or, as mint as possible from the '77 scan). HOWEVER, if people’s lives were harmed/threatened…not so cool.

There is no spoon.

There’s nothing even mildly substantial to the idea that anyone or anything got negatively affected by this leak. It was a scenario fully made up by the people who were consuming the leaked material. A person would basically HAVE to imagine the implications, because they were literally imaginary.

Yes, the leak was real.

And yes, agreed on being allergic to bad video masters.

We don’t know anything about release dates, but I doubt it will take that long to get all 3 on home video. Theatrical screenings perhaps, but with interest in home media dwindling it makes sense from a money making perspective to get a boxset out as soon as possible.

We’ve seen plenty of clips from TESB and ROTJ, so we know the restorations are real. It’s not a matter of if we see them, but when.

They’re obviously happening based on the leaks, but nothing beyond SW’s re-release next February has been officially announced yet.

It occurred to me that if they were to re-release one main saga film per week starting with TPM three weeks earlier, they’d hit Rise of Skywalker the weekend before Celebration Los Angeles.

I’d totally assumed Dune: Part Three was going to get pushed back to that March/April since it’s coming out same day in December as Avengers, but they’re both still holding on December with their respective trailers out.

Obviously that could change, but as of now April is wide open for next year. Theaters might actually need stuff to show, even if it’s just re-releases.

My theory as to why the original April 30th re-release in theaters date for Star Wars got moved up to February 19th (and this is just a guess) is because something unforeseen happened after the original announcement regarding production schedules for either a theatrical movie or Disney+ show and they realized they were going to need something to drop in early May, so maybe (again, just a guess) they decided to put it out in theaters in February so they could drop the unaltered versions on Disney+ on May the 4th.
